Trazadone effectiveness as A.D?

Posted by Tony P on May 9, 2007, at 10:46:26

As I posted recently, Serzone was the most effective A/D overall that I've been on. Alas, no longer available in Canada; but Trazadone, the "parent" from which Serzone/Nefazodone was developed, is still available.

I know 100-200 mg Trazadone is often prescribed now for insomnia; I'm currently taking 200 mg and it's not working all that well. But I understand it is an A/D as well.

Does anyone have experience with larger doses of Trazadone working as an anti-depressant?

100-300 mg at bed time seems to help most people get a good night's sleep, natural feeling, with little hangover except at high doses.

BTW, Trimipramine (an old tricyclic AD) is said to give the most natural sleep. It is unfortunately very long-lasting; I take 100 mg every 2nd or 3rd night (to avoid too much AD stimulant effect). More than 100 mg, and I'm a zombie or sleep all day the next day.

My own insomnia is getting very bad; I take a "cocktail" of a varied combo of AD and sedatives every night with still only 4-6 hr sleep. I may need a higher dose of Trazadone, or something else entirely -- today I see my pdoc, thank heaven.
