It's a beta blocker, meaning that it blocks up certain adrenal receptors (beta), thereby lowering heartrate and blood pressure. Beta blockers are old, reliable cardiac drugs used to decrease stress on the cardiovascular system and various other things.
What makes pindolol interesting is its selectivity for 5HT-1a receptors. Some evidence suggests that, when using it with paroxetine or fluoxetine, it will potentiate and speed AD response. No response is seen with sertraline.
Some believe this is because blocking 5HT-1a autoreceptors stops the feedback loop that would otherwise lower serotonin levels in response to the reuptake inhibition caused by SSRIs. Others think the response may be due to some independent 5-HT1a response.
However, beta-blockers are generally depressogenic, so use pindolol as an augmentor at your own risk.
