A few questions about the MAOI diet...

Posted by football on February 25, 2007, at 15:03:07

- is non-beer and non-wine alcohol considered to be safe (like vodka)?

- which fruits should be avoided, which should be eaten in moderate amounts, which are perfectly safe?

- is NutraSweet safe?

Here's a list I've put together. Do you see any problems with it?

AVOID:
- aged cheeses
- any potentially spoiled meat
- liver
- bologna
- pepperoni
- salami
- fava beans
- sauerkraut
- soybean products
- tap beer
- red wine
- yeast extracts
- overripe avocados
- overripe bananas
- banana peels
- bean curd
- canned figs

USE WITH CATION:
- chocolate (safe to ingest for most patients, unless consumed in large amounts)
- peanuts (see chocolate)
- raspberries (see chocolate)
- spinach (see chocolate)
- sausage (see chocolate)
- wine (see chocolate)
- ginseng (may result in a headache, tremulousness, and manic-like symptoms)
- tofu (if more then a few days old)
- NutraSweet (occasionally causes reactions in people)
- bottled/canned beers (see chocolate)
- raisins (see chocolate)
- caffeine (see chocolate)

DRUGS TO AVOID:
- cold remedies (Contac, Nyquil, TheraFlu, Alka-Seltzer Plus, CoTylenol, etc.)
- any drug that contains DXM (Robotussin, etc…)
- nasal decongestants
- most sinus, allergy, hay fever, and asthma medications
- epinephrine
- demerol
- barbiturates
- surgical anesthetics
- stimulants such as cocaine and MDMA
- opiates and some nonopiate analgesics such as meperidine
- other antidepressants

Note: Some of the drugs may be used with proper precautions

- Thanks.

Yes

Probably best to avoid any overripe fruit,
but there aren't any fresh fruits that can't be
eaten in any amount[if you eat too much of
almost any fruit you'll get the runs!]

Who the hell is going to eat banana peels
anyway? Some people might try to SMOKE
them if they are baby boomers ;D

I've eaten a ton of raspberries, no effect.

>
> - is NutraSweet safe?

It's no problem with MAOIs, but I don't
ingest that crap...tastes awful, and
probably is detrimental to your health.

You can eat raw[purchased raw but cooked at home]
liver as long as it's fresh, hasn't sat in the
store for days. Probably safer to buy it frozen
and cook it at home.

> - bologna

Oscar Mayer[and others] packaged bologna
lunch meat is ok; you don't want to eat
the stuff hanging in the Italian grocery
store[REAL bologna].

> - pepperoni
> - salami
> - fava beans
> - sauerkraut
> - soybean products

Soy sauce is probably best omitted, but it
depends on who makes it. Just a 'taste' is ok.

> - tap beer

I have had tap beer with no problem, but I'm
not going to recommend it.

> - red wine

Have had red wine with no problems...I don't
drink to excess so unlimited red wine might
be a problem. Red, rose, white...all the
same as far as my BP goes. I don't drink
chianti, so I can't speak for that one.
Funny that chianti AND fava beans are
no-no's...Hannibal Lechter must not have
been on MAOIs.

> - yeast extracts
> - overripe avocados
> - overripe bananas
> - banana peels
> - bean curd

Unfermented bean curd, tofu, is ok if very
fresh or you buy it in those pasteurized
sealed lined paper cartons.

You DON'T want to eat miso or tempeh which are
fermented soy products.

> - canned figs

Who eats those? Eat the ones in foil-lined
bags if you don't eat the fresh ones.

>
> USE WITH CATION:
> - chocolate (safe to ingest for most patients, unless consumed in large amounts)

Oh man...I have pigged out on chocolate...
never had a problem.

> - peanuts (see chocolate)

Pigged out on peanuts...no problem.

> - raspberries (see chocolate)

Pigged out on raspberries...no problem.

> - spinach (see chocolate)

Eaten fresh in moderate amounts..no problem...
never pigged out on it.

> - sausage (see chocolate)

Sausage like prepackaged. precooked smoked
sausage and kielbasi[like Hillshire Farm]
is fine, and fresh Italian sausage from
the store cooked and eaten soon after
purchase is ok.

No pepperoni or salami...not worth risking it.

> - wine (see chocolate)

> - ginseng (may result in a headache, tremulousness, and manic-like symptoms)

No experience with this but I've read the
same. Evidently this is based on one
report with Nardil and ginseng.

> - tofu (if more then a few days old)
> - NutraSweet (occasionally causes reactions in people)

> - bottled/canned beers (see chocolate)

Bottled/canned beer is FINE.

> - raisins (see chocolate)

Have eaten as much as 1/4 cup...no problem.

> - caffeine (see chocolate)

No real problem, but you're likely to
become wired if you ingest a lot of
caffeine at one sitting, especially
if you're not accustomed to it. If
you have high blood pressure, you
should watch it if you're taking
Parnate vs Nardil as Parnate tends
to aggravate high blood pressure
in already hypertensive people.

I'd follow the above drug list too-

Antihistamines like Benadryl[Diphenhydramine]
are ok BY THEMSELVES, not combined with
decongestant drugs.

Claritin[loratadine]is safe, just don't
take Claritin-D with the pseudoephedrine.

Imodium[Loperamide]for diarrhea is safe

St. John's Wort: people on
MAOIs are warned to avoid the combination.

The statments here are based on my own
experience; yours may not be the same
as mine. Proceed/experiment with caution.
