Can antidepressants increase endurance-excercise

Posted by rjlockhart on February 21, 2007, at 0:12:52

What im asking is, i know stimulants, ephedra are banned from any Professional sport.

But i have realized sometimes on Prozac i have more energy to jog, and more stanima to go. This is wierd but when you get tired, i think it keeps serotoin levels ok, same with Wellbutrin, dopamine.

I have good workout's on Prozac

Prozac is probably the most activating SSRI and especially in the first stages of taking it, it makes a lot of people jumpy. So its not surprising that it activates you.

I wouldn't be surprised that Wellbutrin also activates you because it is a stimulant... well descended from a stimulant, Tenuate, which is related to an amphetamine.

Its not the serotonin VS dopamine here per se but just stimulating substances, because SSRIs actually downregulate dopamine while increasing serotonin.

You could probably get the same effect with a very strong cup of coffee or one of those ridiculously overpowered "energy drinks" that the Red Bull trend started I'm sure. I can't take too much coffee or it trips my disorder over into an uncomfortable place, but I do take some before excercise. I also take like a tablespoon of dextrose (glucose) so I'm not running on empty.

are you seriuous that SSRI's downgrade dopamine, Prozac i can feel its effects, so im feeling serotonin, and i agree its diffrent from wellbutrin, or Dextrostat because they both are stimulating in diffrent ways.

Well im just have the question having alot of dopamine means your more motivated? kinda right?

Serotoin i dont know makes me more peppy, but not like dopamine.

Oh well.... just asking.

No, it's not the same. Ephedrine causes NE release, exerting a direct sympathomimetic effect. Prozac is probably the last thing a professional athlete would want to take (possible increased prolactin, for one).

Yes, SSRIs can downregulate dopamine, including D2. It was the first thing tried on my Somatiform disorder, Luvox, and it actually did something that was a theory of my psychiatrist. I wasn't particularly partial to a neuroleptic then. But I now take Seroquel.
