cymbalta weight gain + withdrawal

Posted by MSA on January 27, 2007, at 10:51:01

Hello, I was told yesterday by my doctor to come off of the cymbalta, because it no longer seems to be working, I have been on it for over a year now and have gained 40 pounds, even though I go to the gym 3 days a week, and closely watch my diet, my doctor feels the cymbalta has caused my weight gain, I have been on 60 mg. once a day, he told me to go to 30 mg this week, and then 30 mg every other day next week, and then nothing for a week, and then start prozac 20 mg.
Has anyone else experienced weight gain with cymbalta? Any help with the withdrawal will be helpful. Thanks, Melissa

Cymbalta is weird on weight. It seems like more people lose weight on it than gain weight, but both happen. All these drugs have strange influences on metabolic function varying from person to person.

Cymbalta can pack a pretty powerful punch on withdrawals. Not always, but often. Be prepared for stuff like dizziness, nausea, maybe anxiety, maybe worsened depression, maybe insomnia, weird stuff. It can feel similar to the flu. Your doctor's withdrawal schedule is pretty aggressive. I guess if you want to get off it as fast as possible then that is the way to go. But here's one tip that can make it easier. That is, don't wait until you are all done with cymbalta to start prozac. Instead, after your week on 30mg cymbalta, take 10mg prozac on off days when you don't take cymbalta. Then when all done, increase it to 20mg daily. The prozac can wipe out some of the withdrawal symtpoms. And it lasts a week so should smooth things over. The unknown factor though is what side effects you will get from prozac. They will be mixed in and confused with withdrawals.

To get 10mg prozac from 20mg capsules, empty the capsule into juice, stir it real good, drink 1/2 of it, put the remainder in the fridge where it stays good for a week, next time stir it real good again (it won't dissolve and will settle to the bottom).

Oh, yes, Cymbalta caused weight gain for me. I noticed it right off. I took Lexapro and I gain minor weight, but with Cymbalta - it doesn't stop. I know what you mean about watching everything you do and the weight just goes up. It's horrible for weight gain.
