FYI...Here's the incidence of weight gain/loss from EMSAM packaging insert.

EMSAM PLACEBO
N=757 N=614

Gained >=5% 2.1% 2.4%

Lost >=5% 5.0% 2.8%

"In these trials, the mean change in body weight among Emsam treated patients was -1.2 lbs compared to +0.3 lbs in placebo treated patients."

So according to this information, more people lose weight on Emsam than they do on a placebo.

My own situation is I haven't weighed myself which is typical for me most of the time, but since the last several days have been spent in a feeding frenzy with holiday overload, I wouldn 't be surprised if I gained a few pounds. I'll weigh myself in a few weeks before making a decision on Emsam weight gain/loss as I have only been on it about 2 weeks.

Are you gaining? How long have you been on, what is your dosage? If I gain, it is because I have not been exercising for a few months, nor have I been watching what I eat. When I'm depressed these things do not matter as much, I'm not as self absorbed or interested in my appearance, just typical of my depressive symptoms. When I wake up one day and see how fat and ugly I have become, it shocks me. We all know it takes alot of time and effort to look good. It doesn't just happen naturally for most of us. It's a well orchestrated, well thought out plan and you can't do it very well when you're depressed, although when I was younger it was a hell of alot easier...

I remained weight neutral during the initial months (since June of this year) of 6 and 9mg doses. I then experienced an eleven pound weight loss in the first week of the 12mg dose. None further after that (which is really too bad for me!)

Lost 10lbs. since starting patch in April. I am currently on an unconventional dose of 24mg/day, but the weight loss occured during my time on the lower doses. Wondering if anyone else is on such a high dose.

That is an unconventional dose. I hope it is working for you since it must be annoying to wear more than one patch.

Questions...
1.) Is your insuror paying for it since it is a new drug, which is not even on the formulary of most payors. Even if it were, they would deny anything above the recommended doses of 6-12 mg/24 hrs.

At $500 per box of 30 patches, the cost for that dosage would be prohibitive for most of us.

2.) Do you get samples from you pdoc?

3.) Is the oral form of selegilene mentioned as an option since wearing so many patches must be annoying? You must be running out of places to put them. Skin reactions to the patch is the most common SE listed on the package insert.

I'm sure I'll have other questions later. I'm just astonished at that dose! You may want to start another thread so others can hear how you are doing.

I wish more success stories on EMSAM would come out of the closet and post. We seem to usually see the failures. Love Phillipa

I used 18 mg for 12-14 hrs/day for a while, because I took it off at night. However, I found that dose too high even for part of a day so I cut back to 12 mg/18 hours. I didn't have the 18 mg on for more than 12-14 hours or so.

The lower dose is approximately 8mg/every 24 hours. Could be somewhat more or less, depending on absorption rate at any time.

How long were you on the lower doses and why did you switch to a higher dose?

Wait a minute is the dosing even that high? I don't know. Love Phillipa
