Treatments to sexual side effects of Anafranil.

Posted by lukeds on November 26, 2006, at 9:24:51

I have taken paxil for 1998 to March of 2006, and due to its severe sexual side effects, I decided to left paxil.

Now I am since almost 6 weeks on 100mg of Anafranil, 6mg of Xanax xr, 2mg of clonazepam and for sleep 50mg of trazodone.

I have sexual anhedonia in the beginnig of a sexual relationship, but at the end I experience pleasure, and I can go until the end.

But why I experience that anhedonia in the beginning?

I think It has relation with the sympathic and the parasympathic system, cause both control the function of the sexual organs, but one controls in the beginning, and the other controls at the end, but only in the males. In the females only one system controls all the sexual experience. (I read it in a book a long time ago, but I don't remember exactly how they act)

How can I experience pleasure from the beginning to the end?

Could help the herb yohimbe?

Lukeds, Yohimbe is a mild MAOI and would very likely react dangerously with Anafranil. Anafranil and MAOIs are absolutely contraindicated.

Sometimes dopamine agonists can help sexual anhedonia. Marty on here has experience with cabergoline, a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease and has found it very effective. You're unlikely you could get a pdoc to prescribe it, but perhaps Marty would be able to give you some advice?

Wellbutrin has been found effective in reversing some SSRI induced sexual dysfunction but this may not work with Anafranil and may even be agitating and over-stimulating since both drugs have NA reuptake properties.

How are you finding the Anafranil generally? It has been on my list to try for a while, but I was concerned about sexual side effects too. Is it stimulating/sedating? Does it help you sleep?

Good luck.

On second thoughts, I've read some people here using Wellbutrin and Parnate safely and with success, and Parnate has strong NA effects too. Maybe it would be worth a try?

What do you mean by "sexual relationship"? A sexual encounter?

If that's what you mean, it could be that oxytocin increases while having sex, and that increases the feelings of pleasure.

Or do you mean over the long-term during a relationship (weeks, months etc.)?

Do you have a libido since you quit paxil?

I find it a bit sedating I take 25mg in the morning, and 75 at evening. I think it helps my sleep, due it reuptake the inhibition of the norepinephrine, and this neurotransmitter improves the sleep.

It affects to the sexual aspects in the way that it retards the time to reach the ejaculation, and also in me produces anhedonia until the final state when I am going to ejaculate, where in that time I feel pleasure.

Yes.

I don't think the same, I think that Anafranil makes me something in the sympathic or parasympathic system, cause, one controls the beginning of the sexual function, and the other the final stage and the ejaculation.

Or maybe I have low levels of testosterone.

No.

> Do you have a libido since you quit paxil?

Yes. Even when I was taking paxil I had libido.
There is no problem with the libido.

I would NOT ADD ANY HERBS..with what you are already taking this could be extremely dangerous. Personally, i would give Wellbutrin a try. Good Luck!
