Hi all,
I just went to the pharmacy to get my refill of Inderal LA, and I was told that the company no longer makes the LA version. Was anyone aware of this? If this has happened to anyone else, what did you switch over to? I would prefer an LA version, but it seems that propranolol only comes in the regular version now according to the pharmacist.
I'm just surprised that Inderal LA no longer exists. You would think that people who regularly take it for years would have some sort of advance warning and thus be able to research something to switch it with. I only have enough to last me about one more week now. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much.
Sandy

Indicated for hypertension; the only beta-blocker formulation specifically indicated
for QHS dosing. This product was approved under an NDA and is not a generic
equivalent to the other propranolol extended release product, Inderal LA (Wyeth).
Generic equivalents to Wyeth’s Inderal LA have been discontinued. Innopran XL
is available in 80 and 120 mg capsules; Inderal LA in 60, 80, 120 and 160 mg
capsules.
Automatically added to TMOP as a line extension. Not considered for BCF
addition, since the other propranolol extended release product was removed from
the BCF in Nov 1999 due both to limited supply (both Inderal LA and generics
were manufactured by Wyeth) and low usage in DoD.

Okay, it appears that there are no other long-acting beta blockers to be found on the face of the earth (or I'm just freaking and reading over all the information in too rapid a fashion! Lol).
Propranolol passes over the blood/brain barrier, so I'm thinking of staying with this med since it was a good med for me in the LA version. It's just so frustrating that I have a cocktail that works fairly well for me, and now I have to go back to playing around with my meds again!! Ugh!
I would love to hear people's experiences on beta blockers in regards to how it helped you keep your blood pressure and heart rate at a steady level due to anxiety. I've been taking 80mg of Inderal LA twice per day for at least 2 years , and actually was thinking of increasing the dose because I've been having issues recently with feeling my heart beating too much. This is NOT the time to start a whole new med. Ugh.
So.....what have others been using with success? I'm sure lymom3 and myself are anxious to get as much feedback as possible.
Thanks so much!
God bless,
Sandy

Hi again,
I got a call from the pharmacy, and they were able to gather enough of the Inderal LA from surrounding area pharmacies to last me the 3-month prescription refill. After that, I'll need to find another med to replace it.
How did your refill experience go?

I'm not sure what strength you take, but I called Wyeth. They said that the 10 and 20mg have been discontinued but the other strengths have not and should continue to be available....

Well, that's the oddest thing. Maybe my pharmacist was dipping into her own meds a little too often. Lol. I go through Shoppers Drug Mart, which is a national chain here in Canada. And my dose is 80mg twice per day. WEIRD. I'll have to check into it more once the three months are almost up.
Thanks for your info!

There's another long-acting version of propranolol (Inderal LA) -> Nadolol.

I found this on the Health Canada's website for discontinued medications:
I hope that link works.
It shows all the doses, with a date of September 1, 2006.
Maybe they are still available in the US, but for some reason I guess we aren't allowed them in Canada anymore.

Generics:PMS-PROPRANOLOL 80MG

The generics remain covered from what I can see in Health Canada's database in different strengths, the long acting is no longer covered. In the US, It appears that Wyerst themselves has discontinued the long acting formula.ESI Lederle makes the drug though, which is a subsidiary of Wyerst.
It appears there is now "InnoPranXL", a generic
substitute in the US made by Reliant
(http://www.innopranxl.com/) if you check Eckerd. If you link to http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/drug2/product/p16124.html
Inderal LA 120 MG, it makes no mention of discontinuation.I would ask your pharmacist. I would agree that going from a long acting to multiple doses would be annoying but propranolol has been generic for years in both countries -- it was simply patent renewed as an extended release format. Sales may not have been as expected. It is produced as much as generic benzodiazepines and was first introduced to the market in 1967.
It was first approved as an extended release in 1983. The last labelling revision which I cannot figure out exactly what they're talking about was in July of 2004.
You can search any drug approved by the FDA since the dawn of time, with extended information starting in 1984, at Drugs@FDA
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/index.cfmDepending on records, you may or may not be able to see drugs back to the 1950s. E.g. Thorazine, November 1957. Valium, November 11, 1963. Etc.
This is the end of the thread.
