Help- Mirapex and weight gain :-(

Posted by delna on July 24, 2006, at 15:06:13

hi
I really need some help...
I've suddenly put on 20 pounds in 3 months.. The only new thing in my life is mirapex. My doctor says it doesnt cause weight gain...but he says that about everything. Plus I know he has not prescribed it much for bipolar.
Does anyone have any experience with this drug and its weight gaining potential?
:(

Thanks

Dopamine agonists aren't known for causing weight gain, but people vary so widely in this regard with different meds that the possibility cannot be discounted. At the very least, if a drug has a beneficial effect on your mood or some other aspect of your health, a person's appetite may improve just from that, and there may be some weight gain. Beyond that, the drug may act directly on receptors involved in weight and appetite regulation, and what might cause one person to lose weight may have no effect or the opposite effect on someone else.

I really like Todd's explanation.

The only odd exception is compulsive eating. This can occur at the higher dosages used to treat Parkinsons. It is a phenomenon similar to the compulsive gambling that has recently been identified. It can be minimized with dosage reductions.

Thank you so much for your reply..
You are right, it is not possible to predict how one will react to a drug- your explaination makes alot of sense
Thanks again :)

Thanks for your reply
Its been working well in that I have no mood swings or anxiety at all. No suicidal tendencies either. But I have passed the last 6 months without having any emotions or reactions whatsoever. Now that I am coming off the drug I am wondering wher eI have been for so long..I was really stuck in some sort of bubble and because I really lost my memory I was quite oblivious to things around me..
It didnt make me sleepy though, infact I couldnt or didnt want to sleep
As for the weight gain, I'm not even eating very much...less than the average person.
The only thing that makes me suspect this drug is that in parkinson's it slows/stops the rapid weight loss that is typical of the disease. It hasnt really been used much in young women so I can imagine that it may just increase weight in a normal person- perhaps that logic is flawed though. But it has messed with my hormomes for sure so maybe that has something to do with it too.
Hopefully I will return to 'reality' and lose some weight once I'm off

Again I cant thank you enough for the reply....I was just feeling so disheartened
:)
