Lamictal side effects

Posted by Asana on July 13, 2006, at 14:26:24

I am taking Lamictal for anxiety, along with Seroquel, which I'm trying to get off and replace with Lamictal. I'm wondering if anyone has heard or experienced problems with Lamictal relating to being able to verbally articulate, and be creative? And general intellectual functioning deterioration.

Only side effect is excess salivation and I think I stopping it as I can't keep spitting all the time. I didn't know lamictal was good for anxiety thought it was good for depression as an augmenter. Where did you hear it was good for anxiety . Cause if it is I may keep taking it. What dose are you on? Love Phillipa

Hi

Lamictal is good for anxiety like many anticonvulsant / mood stabilizer. Note that it has also a mild antidepressant effect. Some people are very sensitive to this antidepressant effect.

Yes, Lamictal has some cognitive side effects. It is not well documented, but is with no doubt a reality. DIFFICULTIES FINDING WORDS and completing a sentence at once are also a reality.
Note that in some people, Lamictal can also improve cognitive skills. It could also increase some cognitive skills and decrease some others.

Btw, I'm at 300mg and I have all the described effects.

Have a nice day.
Marty

Marty so you like lamictal and had no side effects? Did it make you tired? So with the excess salivation you didn't have should I keep taking the drug or not? Love Phillipa ps you can E-mail me.

hi

> Marty so you like lamictal and had no side effects?

At 300mg, I'm having all the side effects that I described in my last post.

> Did it make you tired?

I think Lamictal is neutral at this level I think.

> Should I keep taking the drug or not?

Do you know if it helps you ? If it does then you can try to work out the excess saliva side effect: There is a drug which is used as eye drops for an eye condition. That same drug is also use often with people who's having too much saliva because of some antipsychotic at high dose. A couple drops on the tongue .. that's it.

The name is Isopto Atropine (1% Gte opht)
1 or 2 drop under the tongue 1 time at night.

It could be worth it if Lamictal helps you.

What do you think ?

Have a nice day.
Marty

I agree with Martin here, Jan. A simple drying agent like the one he mentioned (there are others as well) should take care of the excessive saliva..ask your Pdoc about the above mentioned medication. As always i wish you the best my dear. :)

Only problem is that I've only gotten to 25mg. So I don't know if it will work. Love Phillipa

When I took 400mg one night (not supposed to do) it def helped me with the anxiety but it also made me feel very tired.
