I have been having horrible headaches that my doctor has called 'cluster headaches' -- they happen everyday (from noon, on), for weeks at a time. They occur only when I am in a mixed state -- and resolve when the mixed state ends. I suggested to my pdoc that perhaps the headaches were allergy related and were causing the mixed state -- as in the headaches were so disruptive and painful that they made me feel depressed and irritable and anxious. He brought up the term 'serotonin syndrome' and said the headaches and mood swings might come together, rather than one causing the other.
When googling the term 'serotonin syndrome', it looks like a case of too much medication, but I am not taking any medications right now. The headaches and mood swings occur on their own.
Does anyone else get headaches with a mood swing, and what helps?
I can't find any type of pain reliever to help with the pain, and the headaches last most of the day, and are very strong. Thankfully, they are going away as my mood swing is ending, but I want to be prepared for the next swing.

Cluster headaches are a real diagnosis, but has he also considered migraines ? As migraines are more difficult to control with OTC medications except to add caffeine to ibuprofen. Just a thought. Either can be triggered by biochemistry or stress.

Did you tell your doc you were on no meds? Then he can give you a prescription for a pain killer for headaches. Love Phillipa

There are theories that certain mood disorders and migranes might be caused by some sort of serotonergically mediated increase in inflamation signalling (or something).
I wouldn't call this serotonin syndrome by any means. I've never heard of serotonin syndrome occuring in the absence of a serotonergic medication.
