I'm not sure what interaction is going on. In addition to cymbalta withdrawals, there could also be some interplay in how cymbalta changed abilify's mechanism or blood level. For example, we know that the mechanism of prozac zyprexa combo is different than either one alone. Maybe something like that went on with cymbalta abilify. Just a thought.

Transitions are so hard. You don't know what is doing what.

I'm curious though. Why switch back to prozac? What did you like better about prozac? My doc keeps pushing me toward cymbalta, but I keep telling her that prozac was the best and I would rather go back to it. It had some problems, but we can deal with those later and figure it out after I'm stabilized.

Anyway, cymbalta versus prozac...your experiences? What did you like or dislike about each?

cymbalta worked great but raised my blood pressure and I gained weight. I'm already overweight big time. I had to go up on blood pressure meds. My pressure went up too. 185/108 at one reading. And tht was on blood pressure meds. Raising them didn't help. If you can tolerate it I think it's a great med. Next to that I'm a prozac poster child...lol was on it for 10 years just got too lethargic. Adderall helps and so does abilify.

thanks,

Here's an idea. You could keep the best of both worlds. Use the prozac as your primary base. On top of it, take just a little cymbalta to retain some of the parts of it you liked. Not enough to raise blood pressure though. You can do that by emptying out a capsule into a bowl and counting how many beads to take. 10 beads = 1mg. That way you could have your familiar prozac feel, but add in a touch of the norepinephrine feel of cymbalta in a custom-tailored way that you can control. And actually, as you are transitioning from one to the other, that is a pretty good strategy anyway to make it as smooth a transition as possible. Somewhere along the line you may find a sweet spot.

Just a thought. If you like them both...

Hi! I just made the switch from Cymbalta to Prozac myself, and I'm definitely experiencing typical withdrawal symptoms (brain zaps, anxiety, dizziness, etc.), even though I'm taking the Prozac. Cymbalta seems to be bad about that. I guess the PZ is just going to have to build up in my system. By the way, I'm very curious about Prozac dosing. I'm only at 20 mg., but you say you're taking 40. Isn't that high? What's the typical dose? I need it for anxiety, mainly. And OCD. My depression has also been bad lately in response to my increased anxiety and worrying. Not sure how much of the Prozac I'll need to work up to...

With OCD, many people need to remain at higher dosages for longer periods of time. 60mg is becoming a more common dosage in such circumstances.

Hi J

Anything up to 80mg/day, which is the usual maximum dose.

Ed

I usually take 80 mgs of prozac.

But I went back to the cymbalta for a bit too see how I do with diet and higher dose of blood pressure med. It's been such a good med for me.
two days without spun me out.
I have to have surgery next week and possibly moving to another state. so I have enough stress that can cycle me without changing meds right now. But of course I have watch my blood pressure and I have been back on 60 of cymbalta for two days and so far so good.

80 mgs. of Prozac ? Holy smokes ! I'd be halfway to the moon on that dosage. How do you stand it. I take 20mg and some days it's too much for me.

We're all different. I once overdosed on Prozac (a few years ago) and I had no side effects at all!
