any depress/social anx benefited from Cymbalta ?

Posted by voodoodoll on April 17, 2006, at 23:34:44

Lexapro unfortunately didn't work out for me, it seemed to work at first with glimpses of feeling lifted. but recently i had become bed ridden, having severe depressive relapses. Another main concern was that Lexapro caused me to be lethargic, and it also incurred an overall feeling of numbness, no pleasure or pain. It was successful in the social anxiety arena, in fact after spending an entire lifetime with severe social anxiety disorder, it was quite a godsend. But the consequential numbness left me often times with lack of motivation to say anything. Hard to explain.
However, I was looking for info. Cymbala and I have not really found any cases that seemed work for anybody, and if i did find a case it was not to indepth. Akin to Cymbalta has worked for me i feel slightly better. I am hoping that Cymbalta will give me the energy I need to start doing things again. Has anybody had this kind of effect from Cymbalta ? Has anyone else experienced the numbness I have described in other Anti-Depressants ?

Apathy a big word around here for effects from antidressants notoriously the SSRI's but since cymbalta did nothing for me the first time around I'll add that one too. Sorry I couldn't be more positive. Love Phillipa

Emotional numbness is very common with the serotonin-only antidepressants. Serotonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

I experienced severe anxiety and panic attacks for many years. Paxil was the only AD that worked, but stopped after about 2 years. I tried Lexapro, but it didn't work. I've been on Cymbalta for 6 months and it is working great. It took about 3 months to really kick-in. The drawback is that it did make me feel tired and lethargic, so I am supplementing with Wellbutrin. I was nervous about adding Wellbutrin as I heard it gives a lot of people anxiety. I haven't had that side effect, thank goodness. It's actually been a great to balance out the tiredness.

I have terrible anxiety, and was able to take Wellbutrin to offset the sleepiness and weight gain from Remeron for a couple of years. I found Wellbutrin to have less side effects than anything I've taken, and I tend to have every side effect there is [probably a placebo reaction]. A little ear ringing, and some hair loss, which may or may not have been related.

Wellbutrin can cause tinnitis (ear ringing).

Cymbalta was, by far, the best modern reuptake inhibitor-type med I've taken. Which isn't to say it was perfect. It didn't help my anxiety but it was good for depression, especially the motivation part. Probably the norepinephrine component. I had almost no side effects (some increase sweating noticeable only in the warmest summer months; dizziness lasting about 1 week when starting). It reduced my depression to the point of remission, which was kind of amazing and hadn't happened before or since.

I did really well on 60mg Cymbalta + 20mg Buspar.

This worked for about 6 mos, then pooped out. NOO!!! Increased Buspar up to 60mg but that did nothing, increased Cymbalta to 120mg but got intolerable urinary retention, dizziness, and tiredness. Did some more augmentation (amitriptyline, Wellbutrin, Provigil), none of it worked and I just felt worse and worse.

The past few months I've been cycling through other meds to find one that would actually work for my depression, and now I'm finally taking the leap into MAOI waters (Parnate). Best of luck, I think it is a good drug.
