how can you tell the difference between akithisia

Posted by platinumbride on April 3, 2006, at 10:20:17

and anxiety?

I can't anymore. I had anxiety pretty badly before I began abilify and now I have akithisia and the same old anxiety!

Both are very uncomfortable. Akathisia has yet to respond to anything without putting me to sleep. Anxiety responds to very high levels of neurontin and klonopin.

Any ideas? This sux : (

Hi Diane.

In addition to anxiety, akathisia produces feelings of "inner restlessness" and an inability to sit still. Constant crossing of legs and rocking back and forth. While standing, one constantly shifts their weight from foot to foot or walking in place. There can also be pacing. People use expressions to describe akathisia as a feeling of "crawling out of their skin."

Which of these are you experiencing?

I suppose the syndrome commonly produced by Abilify is akathisia-like. I don't know if it is true akathisia, but I guess that really doesn't matter. It normally shows up early in treatment and disappears within a few weeks. A few people have described symptoms that are unequivocally that of true akathisia. I don't know if this is as likely to resolve on its own. It might not.

Hi Scott,

I do have SOME of the akithisia symptoms...but then again, I had them before I ever took abilify or knew the word existed.

I guess my doc and I will have to figure out which this is or both,

I've been on abilify for over a month now. I was taking, for many months very high doses of neurtontin for anxiety. My new doc wanted to see such high doses lowered. Perhaps that is where it begins and ends. He knows that I need to lose weight. He suggested that neurontin at high doses can make one gain.

I guess we need to find a substitute for neurontin. I metabolize it in a very strange way. I start low, then need more and more and then can take it back to a lower dose. He thinks that I am kind of "deadening my neuro-receptors" or something like that.

As always, I thank you and hope you are feeling better.

I cannot tell the difference between fierce anxiety and akathisia. They are both horrendous torture. When I feel like I'm going 1000mph inside and I absolutely cannot sit still, it is so bad. Depakote and lexapro combo shut down a 2 month long bout of it. I'm in the middle of another one right now. Both times were sparked by weaning off anothe med, first time was st johns wort, this time was zyprexa. So I wonder also if it has anything to do with some kind of dysphoric mixed mania.

If your symptoms have anything at all to do with bipolar, depakote for just a week would be a good trial to see what it can do for you. If it is going to help, it will help anywhere from 1 day to 6 days usually. It also turbocharges benzos and antipsychotics, making them feel more powerful than they are in the tranquilizing department.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I really can't do depakotee, though, because of weight gain. (I'm not just talking bout needing to get into a bikini).

I dislike cogentin. How can you sing if you are so dry? Inderall alone seems to do nothing.

I wish I could just always take vicodin. Now THAT helps LOL
