What works for agitation/ anxiety?

Posted by jonh kimble on March 28, 2006, at 15:24:54

Hi, finally first time in my life something other than an upper or a downer's helping me, that being zyprexa. I take 10mg at night which is beautiful for sleep but doesnt seem to carry over much in the day for the above probs. Might add 5mg in the morning. Also take modafinil (which I think Im gonna stop, just doesnt seem to do anything) dexedrine which IS DEFINITLY making this state worse, but combined with enough clonazepam/ zyprexa, voilla! Still might stop that, addictions not where I wanna head. Finally fluoxetine which I have no idea what its doing if anything.

I see my doc tomorow and Im just wondering what I should ask for/ helped others. My uncle is doing well on lithium, and I have been diagnosed with Bipolar before and never tried it, and I know its used to jumpstart ad's. But is it specifically effective for agitated anxiety? Is a lithium/ zyprea/ prozac combo done/ no contraindictions? I guess what IM looking for is blockade of excess dopamine, thats my theory anyway. I have lots of tics, repetitive movements, jaw clenching, pacing, poor speech control, and pessimistic / agitated anxiety and social phobia. Its tuff but hey, Im finally gettin somewhere.

Thanks for the help. Tom

I'm personally not a fan of med coctails. They can be terrably impairing and not often much more effective than fewer meds. I like the idea of having lots of tools under my belt too, but sometimes it can be probematic.

You might want to try lithium. It is not really an anxiolotic but if anxiety is related to your mood then it can certainly be of benifit. If can help agitation too. Don't know how safe it would be to take with prozac and zyprexa.

If you're in a rough spot it might be worth a shot. I would try it alone and then add things back that are necessary.

Hi Tom.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember you asking about Sulpiride some time ago.

If it was you, did you ever get to trial it?

What comes to my (non-psychiatrist) mind, is some sort of antiepileptic drug which has efficacy as a mood stabilizer. E.g. Depakote. I may be wrong, it's an idea anyway.
