Hi all,
I've been taking ONLY Xanax .25-.375/day for the past two months and have been doing very well, except for the past week (I think I was hypomanic or something). Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have noticed that taking benzos inhibits your ability to speak! I have NEVER had a problem with stuttering, but, about once every day, I'll stutter over a word. It doesn't happen often and I know for a fact that Xanax is the culprit. Does anyone know why this is or have experience with this? Xanax is WONDERFUL for anxiety, but the "slight possibility" of stuttering makes me anxious as hell even though there is no "physical anxiety." As i said before, I have never had problems with stuttering and it still only happens rarely, but I ruminate about this constantly and may have to get off Xanax because of it.Any advice!!!!
Thanks people.

I take Xanax at 4mgs/day, and I haven't noticed any stuttering problems. You might want to read up on whether anxiety alone can cause stuttering. Also, the prospect of stuttering over one word a day should not cause you to doubt the med's efficacy.
Good luck.

I don't know about the stuttering thing. Benzos do cause some cognitive slowing, so maybe it is related to that somehow.
Questions for you...
What time of the day do you take xanax?
It usually wears off in 3 to 4 hours, so I wonder how it keeps working for you all day?
Are the antidepressant effects still working after 2 months?

Anxiety has never ever caused me to stutter. Maybe it is the "word finding" capabilities that Xanax makes a little harder aka. cognitive dulling.
When I first started taking it, I needed to take it 2-3x/day (.125mg each time) but now I only take it once in the morning and it works throughout the day. Call me weird - but it works.
The antidepressant effects wear off rather quickly! If taken "as needed", Xanax can make you feel better, but after 2-3 weeks of continuous use, the antidepressant (it's mild anyway) fades. ALL benzos can actually WORSEN depression and Xanax is no different. I believe Klonopin is worse in this regard, however, but Xanax can unquestionably worsen depression is used long term.So am I the only one that has the stuttering/word finding difficulties on benzos?!
