lexapro+geodon+adderall

Posted by parasolips on January 30, 2006, at 21:26:54

hi folks.
i was just started [insert looooong on&off drug history) on a regime of 10mg Lexapro in the morning and 40mg [to be upped to 80, i think] of Geodon at night. i'm already shaking off the savage muck of agitated depression [self medicated with klonopin and marijuana], almost feel good to the point of hypomania, talking faster, more, to strangers [im horribly socially phobic], talking and acting like a kid in a candy store [im a 24yr old 100lb female] all day.
would it do me any harm to add a 1time dose of adderall [40mg xr] into this mix? would this kick me into mania or back into anxiety? the mania i'm not so fearful of, but do any of you know if lexapro or geodon would reacte adversely to a dose of adderall?
how does adderall affect the bipolar in general?
i'm interested in learning this for tonight, so any quick info would be lovely and helpful.

I'd phone your doctor and see about getting off of this combo of meds AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. It sounds like you're headed RIGHT TO MANIA..

And don't let the thought of adding Adderall enter your mind. It will send you straight up.

I took the exact same mix of meds as you 2 years ago. I took 20mg of Lexapro and 40mg of Geodon at night. After few days, I got excitation and felt wayyy on top of the world; doing the same stuff that you're doing. I have a somewhat similar diagnosis as you basically. Eventually, I got hypomanic and was on my way to the moon. Month later, Full Blown mania surfaced, and I had a BAD manic attack. I never ever had those even untreated.

After all this crap, my cycling became more ultradian in nature, and it WORSENED PERMANENTLY even 2 years after discontinuing that mix. Come to find, it was the GEODON that caused the permanent worsening of my bipolar. I took Lexapro alone another time, and it was very good itself. My doctor gave me Geodon one time to take since I got depressed because Lexapro hadn't kicked in fully. Anyway, It's been a bear to get me stable again after that fiasco.

I'm warning you, though..You need to talk with your doctor ASAP. I don't want the same thing to happen with you that happened to me. If you catch this early and fix this, then the same thing won't happen with you.

Good luck..

I don't think this 3-drug combo is all that uncommon. Lexapro and Adderall taken together may cause hypomania or full-blown mania in anyone. I'd say drop either Lexapro or Adderall. Keep the one that offers you the greatest benefit. Of course, don't make any changes yourself without first talking to your pdoc.

In my opinion, I don't think that Geodon is responsible for inducing mania. The reason is that Geodon is FDA approved to treat manic episodes in bipolar disorder. You're mileage may vary. Anyway, if you continue to take Adderall then Geodon may actually prevent the switch to hypomania/mania [if you're susceptible or predisposed to it].

Hope this helps. Good luck!

fyi - I take regular Adderall 5mg up to 4x/day and Seroquel 100mg at bedtime. It's working well for me so far...
