Axis I: Clinical Syndromes

Posted by Berberis on January 12, 2006, at 17:49:46

On my hospital discharge summary, they put under Axis I: "Bipolar II / Rule Out Personality Disorder". What does "Rule Out Personality Disorder" mean? Does it mean they think I could have a personality disorder and they're not sure but they're more sure about the Bipolar II diagnosis?

It's pretty common to have that -- basically, it means that they don't want to specify that you DON'T have something, in case someone later says you do. I've seen the "Rule Out PD", but never "No PD at all, nuh-uh, nope, nada." I wouldn't worry about it, though. It's apparently so common that it may be automatic with a lot of doctors.

Hope that helps.
