rotisserie chicken and maoi

Posted by blackcat23 on December 9, 2005, at 15:44:52

I ate some rotisserie chicken ordered from a take-out place last night and got a bit of a head ache later in the evening. Think it's related? (I take Parnate) It wasn't a full-blown hypertensive reaction, I don't think. The headache faded after awhile.

Also, anyone had trouble with dried fruits on an MAOI? I like raisins, dried plums, dried apricots, etc. I haven't had any trouble so far, but a new doctor I saw mentioned overripe fruits as something to watch out for.

What about Kraft fat-free mayo? It's made with egg whites and the jar has been sitting in my fridge for months and I've continued to eat it when I make tuna salad. No problem yet, but thought I'd check!

Thanks everybody!

I have seen raisons on some MAOI diet lists as something to avoid. Maybe the chicken was not fresh before it was roasted. That leads me to another question, will cooking remove tyramine even if the raw food contained it? Maybe you got a headache unrelated to food?

Blackcat, you might want to get yourself a home blood pressure monitor. They're quite cheap and easy to use, and will keep you from having to worry anytime you get a headache. As for the fat-free mayo, I don't know but imagine it's probably safe until the expiration date on the jar, as long as it's been refrigerated. I read the label on mine, and it's so full of preservatives it should last for centuries.

I agree with Cecilia. Anyone on old school MAO inhibitors should get a blood pressure monitor. A lot of the diet restrictions are just "educated guesses" and are not backed up by empirical data. Aged cheese and meat are things you should totally avoid. If you are suspicious about a particular food eat a SMALL amount and check your BP every 15 minutes for at least the next 2 hours. If you don't have a problem then you can eat more the next time, but still keep checking your BP. Don't check your BP and eat more in the same session if it is ok since tyramine takes a while to raise your blood pressure. Also cooking does not break down tyramine as it is caused by bacterial action on protein. Could be that the chicken sat in a refrigerator too long somewhere along the way before it was cooked. Whew! Managed to get that out. I just restarted Parnate about 3 hours ago and am getting that spacey feeling that I had last time I started it. Just think of the Jefferson Airplane song "White Rabbit" and you'll know what I mean!
