What exactly is Post Tramatic Stress Disorder?

Posted by rjlockhart on December 5, 2005, at 20:52:53

My mom has it. She goes through episodes of panic attacks and screams when she gets to the extreme.

I dont know if it runs in the family, but i have experienced dissociation. Not feeling real. I dont belive she has had any of derealization episodes, but im not her.

I watched when i was a kid how my mom would lose it.

Then today i feel im going to lose reality.

Is this anything connected?

I have experienced feeling what i see is not real. It is panic attack inducing.

Is this a psychiatric disorder.

I've been through hell with this.

You can google it, and find the definition from the DSM, which will give you the best answer. In fact, it will also be good practice for doing research and learning things on your own.

As for a genetic component, yes and no. There is no genetic component for trauma, so you will not inherit a traumatic event. On the other hand, you will inherit a tendency towards certain responses to trauma. For instance, you may inherit an ability to remain calm in a stressful environment, or to become tense easily. Those tendencies will affect the way you react to trauma.

Do that search.

In PTSD, you are reliving (feeling) original trauma(s), like they are happening at that moment. You may not be able to see or understand that the situation is different now.

I feel that you can get PTSD from any traumatic event, including living with or being close to someone with PTSD. That can be a traumatic event itself.

Hi!PTSD can occur after a trauma and can vary in severity of symptoms and weather or not the trauma was something that happened once or a few times or was longterm ongoing type traumas.Eg a trauma that happens eg rape causes things like reliving the event in both memories and/or attatched feelings and emotions, nightmares, extreme fear and confusion and can involve things like jumpiness, anziety, social withdrawl and unreality and blaming or hateing oneself.Ongoing traumas like abusive relationships can cause probably different severity of symptoms because the person adapts to the situation more but it is probably more damaging in the longterm and causes things like confusion, difficulty making up the mind and problem solving ,feelings of unreality, fears and anziety, emotional numbness and denial, distrust of others, depression. There will be other things I cant remember too.Hope you find the answers your looking for.

Well thanks all. i read up on it, i sort of knew what it was, but didnt know exact symtoms.

I have experienced dissociation, feeling weird, then having fear after it.

I may have inherited some of my mom's reaction responses when i was growing up. So its not genetic, more learned.

Thanks

Matt
