Cymbalta vs. Effexor

Posted by jealibeanz on December 2, 2005, at 12:02:36

What is the main difference between the two? Is it that Cymbalta has more norepinephrine inhibition? If Effexor is making me less depressed and anxious, yet "spacey" is it likely that Cymbalta will work?

The two drugs are in the same class, but are very different molecularly. They're related, in the sense that they both affect both 5HT and NE, but that's about it.

Cymbalta does have a more even affect on the two systems, at all doses. That's probably the most important difference.

Hope that helps.

Cymbalta Questions

You have a lot of great knowledge in that head of yours so would like to pick your brain a bit.

I just started Cymbalta a week ago for a long history of anxiety / panic attacks (tried Paxil, Imimpramine and Lexapro). I am really hoping Cymbalta works...I can't take Benzos at all. It's only been a week so I am far from throwing in the tool but it seems like the neoepinephrine (spelling?) causes a bit of racing heart, wired feeling, restlessness, which I am hoping is just start-up woes.

Q1: Is Cymbalta typically good for anxiety / panic disorder?

Q2: Is it best to take Cymbalta at night or in the morning?

Much thanks for the help,

Shelly

Thank you for saying such nice things about me.

I may have to disappoint you, but here goes with what little I do know:

Cymbalta doesn't seem to be an activating drug. I am, just by nature, kinda wired, tense, fidget a lot, etc, but it isn't any worse -- might be a bit better -- on Cymbalta.

After trying it both ways, evening seems to be the best time for me to take it, but morning will work, too.

Give it a chance, because I think it can be a pretty smooth ride, so even if it doesn't turn out to be the be-all and end-all, at least it won't hurt to give it a fair chance. Good luck with it.

How come you can't take Benzos?
