Posted by FrequentFryer on October 22, 2005, at 21:06:29

Hi All.
Has anyone had bad Hypotension (Dizzy & no Blood to the Brain when standing up). And random Blood preasure spikes not associated to Tyramine from taking Parnate?
Dose it get better after a month or so?
It happened to me and diddn't go away after a couple of weeks, but Im thinking of giving it another try.

the only advice i can offer is increase your sodium intake quite a bit, especially if it makes your sweat.

this can happen with reboxetine too.

> That’s pretty normal for Parnate, especially if you have high blood pressure to begin with or you are increasing the dose. My systolic normally sits around 140 and 120-125 when I was on Parnate and Trazodone. When I went from 30mg to 40mg I would almost pass out about 6 times a day especially if I wasn’t feeling well. BP was around 80/50! I found that splitting the dose up really helped for the hypotension as well as the afternoon sleepy time. I was ok to take 20mg first thing in the morning, but if I tried to take the last 20mg at once I had a really bad problem with the hypotension. BP can also spike occasionally on Parnate, but as long as it isn’t really high it shouldn’t be a problem since these issues tend to resolve themselves somewhat after a period of time.

Another thing if anyone is still listening.
Say I had low Blood preasure while on the Parnate, would it be ok to eat some cheese, or dose Tyramine cause other bad effects aside from high blood preasure. Im really not to worried about to much Seratonin in my brain.

I did read an article that used controlled amounts of tyramine to control MAOI hypotension sucessfully, but the amount of tyramine in food products tends to be all over the map varing wildly between manufacturers, batch, and storage conditions. A safer bet is to increase your fluid and salt intake.

I had mostly hypertension (150 or so systolic) starting it; of course, I started at 60mg/day that time. For myself, I see no reason for such slow dosage titration if I know what my therapeutic dose is. I have so much time under my belt taking amphetamine in combination with high-dose SSRIs that I couldn't imagine that much going wrong then.

It probably will resolve on its own; just keep in contact with your pdoc and let him decide. If you need a 2nd opinion, see a cardiologist.
