My stepdad has epilepsy spasms (smacking mouth, jaw cleaching) He takes 450mg in morning and 450mg at night.

I heard that it is used for bipoler disorder.

How does Trileptal work? shut down electrical activity?

Trileptal is basically Tegretol w/o all the crappy side effects, and without the blood testing. It reduces overall activity in the brain...I think it focuses in on the temporal lobes, but I don't really know. Anyway, I used to take it (600-1,200mgs total daily dose), and its OK...not great, but OK. Its better with agitation and hypomania than it is with anxiety, depression, or extreme mania. If you're given to "mixed-episodes" (aka: dysphoric mania) and tend to get agitated, hostile, and also depressed, its good stuff. Some docs think its less potent than Tegretol; I can really speak to that, but I do think unless you **NEED** the extra strength of Tegretol you'd be better served with Trileptal..its much gentler. It can lower blood sodium levels, though, so those should be checked periodically.
