Paxil vs Prozac – any experiences?

Posted by pseudoname on October 13, 2005, at 16:09:24

A pdoc told me Paxil was chemically very similar to Prozac, so if Prozac didn't do anything for me, Paxil probably wouldn't, either.

But Paxil seems to be marketed much more for anxiety & panic than Prozac. I have some unusual anxiety issues and I wonder if Paxil might work despite a zero (or near-zero) benefit history with several SSRIs.

Anybody have an experience where Paxil kicked in but similar drugs didn't?

(I have to get through my current naltrexone trial before adding anything to it, but I'm wondering...)

I've taken both. Paxil was my 1st AD and it worked pretty well for the 1st yr, but then it wasn't enough. I went through a HELLISH withdrawal and switched to Prozac. At lower levels Prozac didn't do much for me and at higher levels it actually made me worse.

So, I'm not sure what the "take home message" is here. Honestly, I never encourage people to take paxil b/c the withdrawal was so awful. Seriously, it was an entire month that I can barely remember. (And I am usually pretty tolerant of side-effects and withdrawl).

In case you are wondering, I have treatment resistant depression and generalized anxiety. I take a combo of 6(!) drugs right now. It is sorta working, I think.

Best,
EE
