I was just placed on Nardil and scheduled to start taking it tomorrow. Have been on almost every other Antidepressant.
My questions are: Is it safe to eat American Kraft Sliced cheese and regular cheddar cheese? Also, can I have milk, ice cream and other dairy products? Can I eat lunchmeat, i.e.-sliced chicken, turkey, etc. and I know I can't eat salami, pepperoni, or sausauge. Can I eat sour cream and cottage cheese, and mozzarella cheese like on a pizza, of course without the pepperoni and sausage? Is it safe to eat hamburger, steak, pork chops, chicken, and turkey?
Does anyone have an accurate list of foods I can or cannot eat, because the internet says no American, processed cheese and cheddar cheese but the pharmacist said that she thinks that these 2 cheeses would be ok?
Lastly, has anyone had good success with this medication? And, is there anything else I need to watch out for?
Does anyone know if this medication Nardil is safe to take with Provigil (Modafinil)? And, if not, from your personal experiences would you recommend Nardil or the Provigil. These are about my last two options for Chronic Major Depression that I have had for years; I even had ECT treatments several times years back.
Any help would be much appreciate, and FYI I am a newbie to this type of form.
Thank you very much,
Babyrob

Best way to learn is through time, reason being individuals can be more sensative than others,so you really shouldent go out a eat a pizza because john doe can down one with pepporine and a beer, doesent work that way.
What is more true and to the point is you more likly will discover the list of NO-NO`S are few and far between what your worried of.
Best thing to do,and safest in my humble opinion is to try first to get the anti-dote calcium blocker prescribed so you can keep it on you.
Then adhere to the listed diet as strict as possable for approx 2 weeks or until you feel comfortable with Nardils effects, its onset etc, basicaly youll become familiar with its action.
THEN slowly beging to test the diet, finding what are your sensative No NO`S and what arent. Its a slow process but a SAFE one.Channces are slim youll be one of the few who are suspectable to the majority of the list.
To do otherwise,or for someone to recomend otherwise is irresponsable, this is so because the individual differance factor is already established to be REAL,as well as the REAL dangers of what can happen. No one is in a position to tell u what u will or wont react to,you will come across that on ur own,but again more importantly we can tell you how to try and handle it if it does happen.
Im on parnate,i found out quickly enough soy sauce and chinese food in general arent nice with parnate, other than that i can enjoy a pizza and occasional beer. However knowing for a fact people have reacted to cheese pizza i would never flat out tell someone pizza is safe.Good luck, and just take ur time.

Hi. I've been on and off Nardil numerous times. Currently am on it, at 45 mg/day. First thing, I would ask your physician for the med which will counteract the blood pressure increase in case you do ingest something will a lot of tyramine. Sorry, but I forget the name of it. You might want to keep that with you until you feel comfortable with your diet. You can carry it in something in your pocket, such as a contact lens case. That's how I carry my Klonopin, just in case I'm asked to give a major presentation that I haven't been told of.
As far as my diet, I eat pepperoni pizza, processed cheese, and sliced cheese. These aren't exotic pizza's with the possibiity of aged cheeses, though. Mainly Dominos or Little Caesars varieties. Small amounts of Parmesan also don't cause me a problem. I also don't have a problem with Miller Lite beer and White wines. When I do eat sausage, it's in pretty small quantities and nothing that's been aged. I also have no problem with regular cheddar cheese (the kind which comes in a block). This is the stuff next to the American processed cheese.
I definitely stay away from aged yellow cheeses and, in fact that whole exotic cheese isle at the grocery store. The more pungent the odor, the more they've been aged and, I understand, the higher the tyramine content. I also stay away from red wines and aged meats. Anything with which I'm not familiar, I stay away from, such as a meat patte' dish. As far as beer, I'm careful to avoid anything other than the high volume regular, light colored beer. I have no problem with Corona, Miller, or Budweiser. I avoid the microbrewery beer, as I once had a tremendous headache after just having one microbrewery beer. Apparently, it was pretty well aged and with substantial tyramine. Scotch, even aged Scotch liquor doesn't cause me a problem. I have no problem with regular, non-aged meats, such as steak, hamburger, chicken, turkey, and so forth.
Overall, I try to avoid anything with a strong odor or towards the exotic side. Also, when in doubt, stay away from it. Lastly, keep the antidote pills handy just in case you ever do experience a severe headache from something with Tyramine which you thought was safe.
Hope this helps, somewhat. Please keep in mind that what I've said is only what works for me. You may be more or less sensitive to some things. Also, having the antidote medicine nearby, to lower your blood pressure, may help you as you identify what foods/drinks your body can tolerate.

Hi,
I agree with Willyee that different people are able to tolerate or not tolerate different foods. This is not first-hand knowledge but based on a lot of posts I've read here. That said here are a couple of links with a lot of good information on the diet.
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20010814/msgs/75408.html
Be careful with cheddar cheese and pepperoni. A friend of mine had a hypetensive crisis from cheddar cheese. Also, here's a copy of the Sunnybrook study on the diet:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20050103/msgs/437414.html
Pepperoni can be tricky. In it's usual processed form it's ok, but the really good aged stuff is dangerous. There's a discussion of it in the thread above. I think Larry Hoover talks about how to distinguish between the regular stuff and the dangerous aged version.
Good luck!

> My questions are: Is it safe to eat American Kraft Sliced cheese and regular cheddar cheese?American cheese is fine. Should stay away from cheddar (cheddar flavoring/flakes like that seen on some crackers and stuff should almost definitely be fine though).
> Also, can I have milk, ice cream and other dairy products?Absolutely-- unless maybe they're spoiled.
> Can I eat lunchmeat, i.e.-sliced chicken, turkey, etc. and I know I can't eat salami, pepperoni, or sausauge.Lunchmeat is perfectly fine unless it's been sitting out in room temp or warmer air for a long time probably. But i've never ever had a problem with lunchmeat (2 years on 45 & 60mg Nardil).
And even salami, pepperoni, and sausage should be okay unless: they've been sitting out a long time, you eat a wapping amount, or you're on an extremely high dose of Nardil (say, 105mg or more) and eat too much of them. Overall it's definitely smart to be careful with these foods, but i *personally* wouldn't avoid them completely. Again, i have had salami, pepperoni, and sausage (though rarely more than about a few servings i would imagine) lots of times since being on Nardil and never had any problems.
>Can I eat sour cream and cottage cheese, and mozzarella cheese like on a pizza, of course without the pepperoni and sausage? Is it safe to eat hamburger, steak, pork chops, chicken, and turkey?Mozzarella, sour cream, and cottage cheese are perfectly fine. Regarding the other meat items you mentioned-- same as w/ lunch meats.

i have had incredible, almost miraculous success with this medication. And if you read around this board awhile you will see that many others have been quite positively affected as well-- if the side effects are not too overwhelming for them.
Provigil does not even begin to compare to Nardil as far as antidepressant efficacy goes. Go with the Nardil. Also, i am almost certain that Provigil would be okay to take with Nardil, but ask your doctor first of course.
One final thing-- i'm convinced that any type of wine and liquor is okay to drink with Nardil. i'm not positive, but pretty sure. i've drunk certain wines on Nardil that i have read you should/must (?) avoid, and there were no problems. As far as beer's concerned, avoid tap beer just to be safe. Other than that, in my opinion and from my experience all bottled beer should be okay (at least all those you can buy in the States), but i could be wrong.
Avoid sourcraut (sp?) and soy sauce too.
A lot of medications are okay to use, but a lot are very dangerous too, so be careful with that.Good luck to you.

Thank you very much for all of the information you all have given me about the Nardil and Diet info. Much appreciated!!!
Does anyone know exactly what the antedote is called that I should have prescribed in case of a hypertensive crisis? Someone mentioned something about a Calcium blocker or something of that sort. Can someone be more specific if you know what the med is called, exactly and I will get it from my MD.
Also, has anyone had any good experiences with the other drug I asked about called PROVIGIL OR (MODAFINIL) used for depression? And, has anyone used it in conjunction as an adjunct to the Nardil? I asked the pharmacist if the two are safe together and she said Provigil and Nardil shouldn't be a problem.
Any info. on Provigil would be great used for treating depression, and especially if used with the Nardil.
Thank you all so much for your help! This is the best info. I have heard yet; better than the pharmacist and my MD about the reply to my post about the Nardil.
Thanks a bunch, and I look forward to your replies to this post.

Someone prescribed you Nardil and didn't give you any guidance on dietary restrictions or discuss issues related to hypertensive crisis? That borders on malpractice if you ask me.
I'm much as I think Nardil and the MAOIs are relatively safe and effective when used properly, I'd personally be very wary of being treated with them by someone who doesn't appear to have much experience with them and fails to even undertake the most rudimentary patient education.

Is that the med that is supposed to help in a hypertensive crisis?
Although the literature I've seen is mixed on whether it is effective or not.

Nifedipine 5mg or 10mg capsules. You need the standard release capsules, not the controlled release.

Are you sure it's not Nifedipine SL, meaning the sublingual form that goes underneath the tongue for quick acting results? I am a nurse and I know in the ER we would sometimes use Nifedipine SL where you just break the gel capsule and place under the tongue for quick results. Let me know please, and thank you for your response!

Hi Rob,
>I am a nurse and I know in the ER we would sometimes use Nifedipine SL where you just break the gel capsule and place under the tongue for quick results.
Nifedipine isn't well absorbed sublingually. It's more rapidly absorbed orally. It works most quickly if you break open a capsule in your mouth and swallow the contents - rather than holding them under your tongue.
Kind regards

Thank you for your answer and I went ahead and called and left a message with my MD to prescribe me some Procardia SL, unfortunately, I won't have it until after I get back from Vacation; therefore, I will just have to be real careful of what I eat while away on Vacation. Appreciate yours, and all of your help out there!
Thank you,
