Is taking an AD good when i have BP2?

Posted by woolav on June 2, 2005, at 14:45:07

Hello everyone. Someone has prob already answered this for me. But i have bad short term memory now..anyway.
I take what to me is a high dose of mood stabelizer meds and klonopin for anxiety. But, my pdoc has kept me on prozac and i wonder if that is ok. I thought bp2 ppl should not be on an AD because it can cause manic episodes? Has anyone heard of this?
Thanks
S

It all depends on what type of BP2 you have. If you are a rapid, or ultra rapid cycler, meaning you go through many mood in one day, the usually it's best to stay away from ADs. Otherwise, you usually need one. SSRIs are known for bringing hypomanic episodes and Prozac is an SSRI. However it was the only SSRI I could take that didn't bring one on.

I hope this answers your questions. :-)

Thanks Maxime...I dont feel like i am a rapid cycler, but I can have a good day and then a bad day, but not in the same day..if that makes sense. My pdoc must have thuoght the same as you if he kept me on the prozac. I just read that it wasnt good to take ssri's with bp2, but you have helped to clear that up for me.
thanks!!

hey! When it comes to using antidepressants in bipolar, different docs operate differently. Some will keep a patient on an anti-depressant, as long as there's also a mood-stabilizer involved and there aren't any signs of hypomania or mania. This is done for people with hardcore, recurrent depression, anxiety, etc. On the other hand, some prefer to rarely use antidepressants, and taper them off after the patient has more or less recovered from a depressive episode. At any rate, the worst offenders for inducing mania are the Tricyclic Antidepressants; the SSRIs are better, although Prozac has a bad rep for making lots of people, especially those with bipolar, crazier than they were when they started taking it. Wellbutrin is considered the cleanest AD for bipolar, and lots of docs also like Effexor.
