Ativan

Posted by soulkiss on May 16, 2005, at 19:16:18

I have been taking Ativan 1mg x daily for almost 10 years and find that I can maintain on that dose...I have tried Prozac (the side effects were too much)...Celexa (thought I was going to climb the walls)in the past...now I have a GP who wants me to try Effexor XR and I am having anxiety over that...all of my health is fine otherwise...and although there is alot of contraversy with the benzos...Ativan is considered one of the least to be concerned about:

"The controversy surrounding benzodiazepine administration and potential abuse or addiction in routine patient use is generally not supported by the available scientific evidence. In a large community study of long-term alprazolam users, Romach and colleagues (1992) found that dosage did not escalate over prolonged use and that most patients used the benzodiazepines as prescribed. In fact, if deviations occured, it was generally that a patient took less than the prescribed dosage." from: "The American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Psychopharmacology" by Schatzberg and Nemeroff, 2nd Edition (1998)

...anyone have any comments? Thanks

Yes im my case it's true. When the med is working you tend to cut back because you don't need it anymore at that dose. Most people who use benzos don't want to take meds. At least in my case. Fondly, Phillipa

Lorazepam i dont believe has alot of abuse potiental, well for me it just makes me numbed. At higher doses, you dont rerember much either.

I dont believe it gives this "relief" sense other benzo's do, it sort reduces inner stimulantion, numbs emotions.

I take 1mg X3 daily, but not all the time because it just "turns down" stimuli, and can be quite depressing, at higher doses.

This is just my personal opinion.

Ativan wasn't my favourite benzo. The amnesia wasn't helpful socially, you know, you forget, peoples names, what you're talking about. Valium's bad enough.

I have an excellent memory...what was your name again?...seriously...Ativan hasn't impaired me in that way...and honestly it has less side effects than alcohol for me...
