who has had a hypomania episode??please respond

Posted by woolav on May 1, 2005, at 18:26:46

I had never been sure that i was bp2 until recently when my T brought it up. Now it makes complete sense of my past and present behaviors. I had a hypomania episode (but at the time had no idea what it was) and did some crazy things. One major thing was i began chatting online and flirting sexually over the internet. I have no idea why i did it other than the fact that i wanted ppl to say i was sexy and they wanted to have sex with me. My husb doesnt believe that this could be a symptom of hypomania and thinks i was completely sane in my mind when i did that. I hope he will go to my doc with me to undertstand more about bp2 or 1 (i dont know what i have) but he doesnt think what i did was caused by any kind of brain disorder ie..bp ----advise anyone??
Thanks

Maybe you should just read the criteria for yourself. From what you're saying, your behaviour easily fits into the diagnostic framework of bipolar II.

http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis1/p21-md05.html

Look at criteria six and seven, under hypomanic episode. You'll have to decide if other criteria are being met, as well. According to the guidelines, you need three positive findings, i.e. 3 of the 7 behaviours (or more).

Hypomania can also be induced by antidepressants.

I remember you posted this before. I had another thought. Is there a Video you could get from the library, pdoc, etc on BP. Then the two of you could watch it together. There was also a book at my pdocs distributed by one of the drug companies that is dialogue and situations for BP pts and their families. Fondly, phillipa

Hi:
First, ... what form of med./med. combo. you were on when you got/started 'those' urge.

Hypomania is NOT only 'sexual' things, but also 'over-productive' to accomplish more than your 'normal' capability. In my case, I did cleaning all over the house, plus yard-work I normally never touched. Also, 'speedy-talk' to almost non-stop conversation with even strangers I met at the local grocery store. And among others I never did on my normal mind. It was something like a 'dream' in my recollection. At that time, ... I never thought those 'crazy' mind was due to my 'undiagnosed' Bp. Afterwards, strangely I developed 'deep' depression. Bipolar has not only 'hypomania' but also depression. If you have ONLY 'hypomanic' episodes, ... in your case, 'sexual' related, ... then it's NOT Bipolar. Rather, it sounds to me like you have 'impulsive' nature of M.I. which I can not remember to name/label for.

As for your hushand's suspicion, ... it's quite 'bad,' ... however once he started to suspect your 'over-stimulated' activities, probably he has been experiencing a difficult time to believe your story. Because, ... as we know, LOVE is related to trust, or vise versa. You can, however, ask your husband to go to your T session, but if he's NOT willing to do so, it might not work things out as you expected. On other Bp sites, I read posts similar to yours, enormous to semi-sexual urge with strangers. Then, at least, in this regard, you're NOT alone.

Thanks Larry, I printed out the link.
Also, Happy Girl, I have been taking the same meds for several months now. Prozac, Lamictal and klonopin. I definetaly have depression too. Major, where I think of suicide alot!!! But, I am going to a new pdoc and I have a T now, to find out more about this illness. Also, Philipina, thanks as usual for your thoughts...

Hi:
On your next appt. with your pdoc., ask him/her an AP, such as Seroquel(weakest AP), Risperdal and Zyprexa(both are strongest APs).

Your med. combo. does NOT alleviate your Bp symptoms, on both, depression and hypomanic episodes, particularly 'impulsiveness' mentioned in your previous post. Sounds to me like you CERTAINLY need an AP in order to wipe out 'those' temptation. Being/having Bp II is NOT necessarily 'mild' form. Bp is still a Bipolar that brings a lot of 'havoc' in your relationship. Tell your husband you're going to take an AP that would cure your 'problem.'

I have been diagnosed as BPII, and have had a hypomania episode, but didn't know it until it was over. I just knew that I wasn't "right", and felt suicidal. I really can't explain it, and I don't want to go back to it agian. My doctor put me on Topamax, and Zoloft. The topamax was at my request due to some research on my own, and I am quite pleased with both of the medications. I am back to feeling like my old self, and really never thought I would be in this place after these past three years. I do take Klonopin at night for RLS, and have for six years. That may or may not help this situation, I don't know for sure. It can't hurt. Let me know if you have any questions. -L

Thats what happened to me. I didnt know i had an episode until it was over. I have always known about my depression of course and the suicidal thoughts, but never realized i was cycling in both directions. I cant wait to see my new pdoc and see what he advises.
Thanks

I didn't know it either, because it would happen in different time increments. ( One extreme, to the other) How is a person to know? -L
