Hey guys,
Thank you all so much for the support. This is day 2 of feeling normal. Can you believe it! This is also day three of taking the Topamax. Does it work that fast??? I'm only on 25mg, I didn't expect it to be that effective. Maybe that combined with the 600mg Seroquel did the trick? Anyway, I am so happpy. "Normal" never felt so good. It's funny, before this I really didn't believe that I was bipolar. And I used to wish I could go hypomanic. I thought it sounded like fun. Ha! I will me med compliant now. I will not chase hi's and I will do everything in my power to stay stable. I don't ever want to be depressed or hypomanic again. Is that possible? Probably not huh? Has anyone managed to stay stable? Or does Bipolar involve ups and downs that you just kind of have to roll with? Tell me what you think.
Peace, Love, and Happiness ;-)

My dad is bipolar 1 (typical bp).
Anyway, there were months and months were he was "centered" while I was growing up.
Then there were many months were he would get manic- super high high's, not sleeping for days an days, spending money we didn't have (we lost everything once because of this!), and he would often leave my mom and me for some other woman during this time (became a sex addict during his manic periods).
THen- he would crash and become depressed (and come back to my mom). He would be suicidal, then he would usually go on a drug binge (cocaine was his drug of choice), and then eventually that would end.
And once again- he would be back to himself for a while; going to church, being more stable, etc..
So yes, I think bp's can have stable periods. My grandmother was also bp and she had years of stability but it was only when she was on Lithium.
I think being on the right meds is likely the key.
Do you have any side effects from the Topomax?? And how do you function on that much Seroquel? I was on 25 mg's and I could hardly walk! LOL

> dmI hope that I can stay stable. I've stopped taking serotonergic antidepressants entirely for the first time since 1992 (it's been over a month now). My head is a LOT quieter and I haven't had any temper outbursts since I stopped. The trouble I'm afraid is going to be my seasonal depressions. They've been stubborn for many years. They haven't really been that bad, and they don't last really too long, but they are a drag. I'm hoping the next one will just be a nuisance for a few weeks. I'd be happy with that much improvement-I could put up with that. -- Mitch

Hi:
>>>> Has anyone managed to stay stable? <<<<--- I'd say it can be manageable as long as med. combo. is working on you. However, this does NOT guarantee 100%, because Bipolar is said to be a 'life-long' battle, which means Bipolar NEVER be cured by med. combo. Then, whenever any 'triggers' would happen, Bipolar started showing up from nowhere, like a trailing 'ghost.
In my case, when my 'stress' level getting 'high'/over my capacity, Bipolar comes up right away, although I never invite it. In order to manage my 'up's and down's, I try to 'eliminate' any stressful events as much as possible. In other words, some 'life-change' along with support is VERY essential for me to lead a life as normal and happy as possible.

Some very good advice. And Spriggy, my ex father-in-law is Bipolar and did all the thing your Dad did except to take drugs. He used to say bad things about people and be very argumentative. He would always go off his lithium to lose wt. Then he would crash, and I mean crash. He became a very wealthy businessman when he was stable. He only became unstable in his 50's. He's still alive, still married, and living in an assisted facility in Fla. So someone always gives him his meds. He has to use a walker now and is incontinent so my ex mother-in-law couldn't manage him . He's in his 80's now. Wow how time flies! Fondly, Phillipa

Right now on Topamax I feel a little dizzy and fatigued. I've been taking Seroquel for a long time. I take it all at night so I get pretty good sleep, but it doesn't affect me during the day. I'm sure the Topamax side effects will go away soon because I've been on this med before.
And I forgot to mention that I did get a chance to talk to my pdoc. He said go ahead with the Topamax
