On Parnate: what to do about sinus congestion?

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on April 13, 2005, at 12:29:05

Hi everyone, again I apologize for not having posted in a bit but I've just been so busy lately. The Parnate really seems to be the answer!! I've been on it for seven weeks now and my dose is currently 30mg/day. I also take 8mg Klonopin and just last week had 5mg Focalin QID added to my regimen. The Focalin is likely just a temporary thing while we're adjusting my dose of Parnate.

I have a bit of a problem, though. I've never had seasonal allergies in my life, but this year apparently I've developed them. Benadryl seems to work fine at keeping most symptoms at bay, but I can't think of anything to help with my congestion. I'm going to talk with my pdoc about this during our next appointment on Tuesday, but until then I thought I'd get some input from anyone I could on PB.

Now, obviously, pseudoephedrine and propylhexedrine are contraindicated while taking Parnate, but on the other hand, I do already take methylphenidate and seem none the worse for it. Do these OTC decongestants present more of a problem for those taking MAO inhibitors than methylphenidate does? I think I'll end up trying some Benadryl Allergy & Sinus before I go back to see my pdoc since I do have nifedipine on hand, just in case. The congestion hasn't been helped at all my oxymetazoline, which doesn't surprise me since stronger sympathomimetics were always necessary for me when it came to sinus problems.

Well, I look forward to any input, and I look forward to hearing how you all are doing as well! If anyone has any questions more specifically relating to my experience with Parnate, feel free to ask! :-)

~Michael

Hi Micheal,

>The Parnate really seems to be the answer!!

Excellent :-) What happened to pramipexole btw?!

>I've never had seasonal allergies in my life, but this year apparently I've developed them. Benadryl seems to work fine at keeping most symptoms at bay, but I can't think of anything to help with my congestion.

A corticosteroid nasal spray is likely to be the safest and most effective treatment. You'll need to use it on a daily basis. I wouldn't risk taking pseudoephedrine, it's not as effective as topical corticosteroids anyway.

I stole this from Martindale...........

'The actions of topical corticosteroids in allergic rhinitis include relief of inflammation, a decrease in capillary permeability and in mucus production, and vasoconstriction; they inhibit both the early and late response to allergen exposure. Corticosteroids are first-line treatment for the prophylaxis of moderate and/or persistent allergic rhinitis..............Those applied intranasally include beclometasone, budesonide, flunisolide, fluticasone, mometasone, and triamcinolone. At recommended dosage, local adverse effects are mild and transient and systemic effects are not a risk; aqueous sprays may cause less local effects than pressurised aerosols.'

Regards,
Ed.

Damn you Ed, you've already said just what I was going to say!

I suffer from Allergic Rhinitis and find cortical steroids very effective in controling it.
I completely agree with Ed, I would try a steroid spay before trying anything else.

Hiya!

Which one do you use?

Flixonase, Beconase, Rhinocort aqua, Nasonex, Nasacort, Syntaris......

Flixonase and Beconase seem to be the most popular.

Ed.

PS. Did you post under your old posting name earlier today? How confusing!
