Frustrated w/Mood Stabilizers!

Posted by TrishP on April 11, 2005, at 17:42:04

Ugh! I don't know what to take anymore. I've been taking Wellbutrin XL and like it accept that it sometimes makes me feel agressive. My Pdoc says I need a mood stabilizer.

I've tried Lamectil - made my mouth break out in blisters
Tried Geodon - couldn't orgasim, made me hyper
Tried Topamax - hurt my bladder
Tried Abilify - made me mean and agitated
Tried Trileptal - made me bleed all month - couldn't take birth control with it.

I don't know what to do. I don't want to take anything that will make me gain weight. Maybe I should switch to Effexor? Any ideas on mood stabilizers?

Lithium? You don't really a lot of weight on this med. Now depakote is another matter. You gain big time.

Some people use Neurontin as a mood stabliser. It's approved as one, but it works for some people.

For me clonazapam works well. But the Trileptal helped with the irritability.

You might want to go to the Alternative board. There are many vitamins and minerals and fish oil etc. that can help.

I guess since you had the weird reaction to Trileptal you won't want to try Tegretol.

Verapamil has a low side effect profile.

Here is a site that might give you some ideas.

BWT, Niacin is very helpful for irritability.

Have you seen the following table? It might help.

Note that it differentiates positive trials from negative trials...

I'm on Depakote, 500mg/day; I like it. Low doses (say, under 1000mg/day) rarely cause weight gain. I also take Seroquel at night, which is also now being used sometimes as a mood stabilizer. I've never tried Lithium or any other anticonvulsant, so I do have rather limited experience.

Overall, my advice: I would take your doctor's advice about which one might help you the most, but whatever it is, ask to start on a low dose, gradually going up only if needed.
