TCA HALF LIVES

Posted by enjay on March 20, 2005, at 2:16:58

Does anyone know of a link that will give you the half lives of the various TCAs.
-I am currently on Celexa and after a TCA to
assist with sleep but with minimal hangover
effect.
Thanks

All of the tricyclic have an average half-life of about 24 hours. Doxepin, however, can have a half-life of as short as 8 hours. It depends on whether you are a rapid metabolizer or not (cytochrome P450 2D6 enyzme). Doxepin probably makes the most sense to start off with.

There are some really good charts comparing tricyclics on the Web, but I don't happen to have any links handy.

This chart seems to be accurate. You could use your browser's Find function to search for "TCA". It will speed things up in locating the tricyclic antidepressants out of the many drugs listed.

Have you already tried Remeron?

Scott I'm currently cutting my remeron down due to wt gain and am down to 7.5mg with l0mg of valium. I'm sleeping. Do you think the l0mg of valium will work alone? Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks very much Scott for that link-it was perfect.
No I've not tried Remeron. I've used a low dose TCA before for sleep so thought I'd stick with what I know.
Any advantage of Remeron over a TCA for sleep ?
