amphetamines/antipsychotic interaction

Do antipsychotics fully antagonize the effects of amphetamines? If you take them both together, do they both work or does neither one work?

I would think it is not necessarily a case of all or nothing--they probably lessen the therapeutic effect of each other. In other words, their combined use is complex but not pointless.....
I am using 5mg Abilify and 25mg Adderall.

I have taken both (15mgs Abilify, 60mgs Adderall) with OK results. Basically, this is my understanding: some antipsychotics (mostly the higher-potency typical ones, like Haldol) will more or less block a stimulant completely. This is why they are used to treat amphetamine psychosis instead of more user-friendly newer drugs. That said, stimulants and antipsychotics can work together; some shrinks rx stimulants to offset problems caused by antipsychotics, and the people who make Provigil are apparently supporting some studies to see if it will help with cognitive function and overall outcome as adjunctive therapy for schizophrenia.

I still don't get the provigil. It would seem to me also, that if you are taking any drug to calm, etc. and added provigil, they would cancel themselves out and would be neutral. Fondly, Phillipa

It seems that abilify would be the best choice to use with amphetamines because of it's unique pharmacology.

Provigil is actually calming. It's a 'somnolytic', not a stimulant, or so the claim is, and I would support it. I got insomnia from it for a time (the somnolysis) and then just felt less sleepy all the time. I have a suspected case of narcolepsy and often can't stay awake past 8 pm, and feel half awake all the time. A conventional stimulant like ritalin took care of that, but with extreme irritability and appetite loss, and I was tense all the time (past my baseline which is stratospheric anyway!). Provigil made me feel awake but without the heart racing, etc., that Ritalin induced. It appears that Provigil is more selective in terms of regions of the brain that it effects, i.e. that it concentrates in the hypothalamus, where the structures that control sleep and waking are preumed to lie. Ritalin and amphetamines affect the brain globally.

yeah, I think abilify+amphetamines might be the way to go if you must do the combo, but I don't know. As for Philipa's comment about Provigil...Provigil is weird. I don't understand it at all. But, apparently, it prevents excess sleepiness w/o too much jitteriness and isn't exactly an "upper" as those of use who have experience with older meds would understand it.

I havent really noticed any interactions while on adderall xr and seroquel but then again maybe there are. I am coming off of seroquel right now though. I used to take provigil before adderall because I have fatigue as well as add from fibromyalgia. And rheumatologists are concerned about sleeplessness occuring so i tried that first it was amazing the first two days and then a few days later it began to wear off by noon after a 7am dose, I was on 200mg. and then I would be tired again. It was extremely strange. I have heard of people taking a daytime dose such as the people who use it for narcolepsy but you run the risk of not sleeping at night. So I dont know I eventually stopped it during a hospital stay and then i ended up on the adderall xr

seroquel, zyprexa and risperdal can antagonize the effects of amphetamines, same goes for the typical antipsychotics but I couldn't find any information saying that abilify will antagonize the effects of amphetamines so Abilify will work with amphetamines.
