Effexor or Celexa and Sweat

Posted by SidneyG on February 10, 2005, at 1:15:43

Anyone had problems with night sweats? I mean sooo bad that I wake up wet and therefore freezing cold? I am on both Effexor XR and Celexa and have many of the same issues y'all talk about. Just wondering if anyone can relate to this one

I believe a lot of Posters have experienced this. I wonder if all the Ad's cause this as I have experience this as well on other Ad's. Or, maybe it was menopause. Fondly, Phillipa

Yes I've had terrible night sweats with Prozac, Effexor and Cymbalta. I believe they are a possible side effect, though it seems definitely not universal, since I believe we would hear about it much more often if it were. They have been the main reason that I have stopped taking these medications (along with some weight gain). I have noticed that the intensity of night sweats are definitely dose related. The only AD that didn't give me night sweats was a low dose of Lexapro (5mg).

I had pretty bad night sweats during my recent high-stress anxiety/depressive state in the fall, which then went away. After getting on the Effexor, I had no sweatiness problems for the first three weeks, but the past week I've been really sweaty - when I go to the gym, the sweat runs in streams down my face and chest. I've never had this problem before - I was a "glow-er" not a "sweat-er". I get sweaty at night too, but not to the degree that it sounds like you others experience. I've had a really sweaty day today as well, really clammy and sweaty and sticky, and it's -9 outside! I hope this too will dissipate, but I have little faith seeing as how many others have had this problem too.

Ugh. Just had my first night of horrible drenching sweatiness. Woke up in a pool of sweat that soon turned cold. Yuck.

What do folks do about this? Are flannel sheets better than cotton? Should I put more than one layer of sheets on the bed? Should I wear pyjamas or is it better to sleep naked?

Do I have to buy polypropylene sheets to get that "wicking" effect? (I wonder if they make polypropylene sheets.....?)

Anybody have any advice on how to contend with this yucky side effect?

BTW, Phillipa, I live in Toronto, Canada - that's why it's so cold. How about you?

Phillipa - I see it's about 6 degrees in North Carolina right now (about 43 fahrenheit). That's warm! It's supposed to go down to -11 tonight.

If anybody has any ideas about combating medication-induced sweatiness, I'd appreciate hearing them. I was thinking about dousing the bed in baby powder, but that might just result in a messy pile of cold sweaty, sticky, powdery yuck.

I've read through old postings and the only thing I can hang my hope on is that the night sweats will pass with time. It appears from what others have said that this, too, is a result of one's body getting used to the medication. What joy.

It seems I have posted regarding this side-effect about four times in the last month and have never really discussed it before ;-)

I have been on meds for years, and specifically on Effexor for a little more than two years, and this side-effect has not gone away. Night sweats, every night, without ceasing, have found no remedy.

I have a pet theory regarding the night sweats being a result of mild withdrawal syndrome, so I tried changing the timing of my Effexor dosages. This has resulted in incredibly bad sleep and feeling like absolute crap during the day but seemed to lessen the night sweating, of course, I wasn't even sleeping and I then had hot flashes and sweating during the day (doh!).

I live in Minnesota, where it is quite cold during the winter months, but here I am, drenched and shivering every morning. Oh well. I sleep with minimal clothing, and try not to overdue the blankets and I keep an extra blanket next to the bed to wrap up in when I wake-up all cold and soaking wet.

Hi dove,

Since that one night a couple nights ago I haven't had the bad night sweats again. Lucky me!

I think you're right that it has something to do with mild withdrawal - I forgot to take my meds that night and took them about 3 hours later than normal. Since then I've been taking them within about an hour of usual, and haven't had the problem recur. I still do sweat more than usual at the gym, for example, and feel clammy etc. during normal periods of exertion during the day, but at least I've been saved a couple nights of night sweats.

Thanks, however, for the tip about keeping an extra blanket close by. I'll do that just in case the sweats come back.

Jen
