I developed an itchy and red, slighty raised rash yesterday morning that spread across most of body within an hour. I have not changed anything at all in my diet, or cleaning detergents. I had not been bitten by anything.
I went to a doctor and when I mentioned I am on Cymbalta, he prescribed Aterax which I did not get. I went and bought some antihistamine instead. This morning it has cleared up a bit on my body but my hands and feet are very swollen and look sunburnt. I still itch from time to time.I have been on Cymbalta 60mg for 22 days.
Cymbalta is really helping and I wouldn't want to stop taking it, but I can't find any other reason for this rash.

Sabrina,
Have you called your pdoc about it? (It sounds like the doctor you talked to isn't a psychiatrist.) I would definitely talk to a psychiatrist. You might also contact the makers of the medication and look for information on their drug monograph as to whether that kind of reaction is serious and you would need to get off of the medication. I hope that's not the case though.I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Hi,
Atarax (hydroxyzine) is an anti-histamine. It can be quite effective for itchy skin.

Ed.

hi,
i am on cymbalta too at 60mg and have woken up about five times with a hive or two on my face which is a similar reaction to your rash i believe. I just left it alone and it went away (although i doubt mine was as irritating as your was). As long as i only get it once in a while i can live with it. Like you, I suspect the cymbalta.

Also, no rash should be taken litely. Sometimes, like the rash people get on pennicillin is an indication of allergic reaction to the med. This means that the longer you take it the more likely it is to develop serious side effects, even analphalactic shock. I'm not trying to scare you, but definitely call your pdoc and see what he says. I'm surprised the doc you went to took it so litely and literally "blew you off". Good luck and keep us posted. Fondly, Phillipa

Sounds to me like an allergic reaction to the Cymbalta. IMO you really need to tell your doc about this. Good luck.

Well, the rash came and went in stages yesterday. Sometimes severe, sometimes not. What did concern me was the swelling in my hands and feet. My ankles and wrists have all but disappeared. And no sign of a rash today. It was really bad last night and today it is gone. I can't wear any jewellry and my shoes really hurt.
I am seeing my pdoc on Friday.I take Cymbalta at night because I find it sedates me and I forgot last night. Wonder if that is the reason the rash has disappeared. But then how do I explain the swelling?

Just because you didn't take one dose it doesn't mean that it is out of your system. You still have Cymbalta in your system. The fact that you now have swelling suggests that your reaction is becoming more serious and escalating and you really need to call your pdoc now, and not wait til Friday. Other Posters have already told you to call your pdoc. Fondly, Phillipa
