Hello,
How much weight have people lost on stimulant treatment?
Has anyone gained weight on a stimulant?
Did you develop tolerance to the appetite suppressant properties of your stimulant?
Did you regain the lost weight without stopping treatment?
Was the weight loss problematic?
Does your stimulant counteract the appetite increase due to your other meds?

PS.
Does anyone feel that using a stimulant as a child (long-term) has permanently stunted their growth?

hi ed,
i managed to avoid ADHD medication as a child. it wasn't until i got to college, didn't have parents around to object, and was sort of intrigued by the idea that i got medicated.
different stimulants were more or less appetite suppressing. strattera and wellbutrin (not real stims) didn't have any effect. provigil was interesting. more than any other drug in this category, it made me super-focused to the point that i would do one thing for hours and hours and into the night. it suppressed my appetite so i had to remind myself to eat, but i had no problems eating when i did. concerta was much the same way for appetite, but it didn't have the robotic repetition of actions. adderall has been my lifesaver and nemesis. immediate release adderall had some appetite suppression, but in between doses i was able to eat just fine. i don't think i lost weight on this. then i switched to adderall xr, and that was a different story altogether. it doesn't last so long for me-- no more than eight hours-- but it killed my appetite and i had a hard time eating not just because i was never hungry but because food turned me off. adderall wasn't the only culprit; i was constantly lithium toxic or toxic from something in the fall, and i also got scoped, which left lacerations in my throat. in total, i lost about 15, maybe even 20 pounds. my baseline weight was 110 at 5'5. when i was in the hospital for lithium toxicity, the doctors concluded i was anorexic even though i didn't fit all the criteria and had a slew of drs and famiy and friends vouching that i'd never had eating problems. so yes, adderall weight loss has been problematic. still, i know adderall isn't the sole culprit, and now that i've been on it for half a year, i think i'm actually addicted and not just dependent. i can't start a day without it, and it scares me to think of life without it. most drs hate it and want me off ASAP, but i haven't been able to taper the dose.
if you're looking for weight loss, amphetamines, probably meth, especially, are probably the best. but if you love food as i do, the turn-off from it might be disturbing. ritalin and provigil are good options if you don't want to lose weight but still want some stimulation.
this is just my experience. hope it helps!

I'm 112 and 5'5". I might forget to eat sometimes but appetite is usually fine. I love to eat too, and lots of it. It just has never wanted to stick to my bones on its hurried way through, lol. I eat lots of carbs and sleep a lot, do daily muscle strengthening and 3-4 times a week cardiovascular exercises as ordered by my Doc. Cold temperature increases my appetite I could just snack non-stop. (Concerta and Provigil)

hey bimini-- it's nice to hear from someone else who has a similar build and metabolism. since most people have the opposite-type problems, i usually meet attempts to get advice or help with a "poor baby, boo hoo" response. i'm glad, too, that your dr has prescribed the stims you need without being overly worried about your weight or without assmputions about an eating disorder.

I hadn't thought about my Doc worrying about eating disorder and didn't know stims could affect appetite. When Doc first asked about weight changes I told her I don't know, don't own a scale because my weight has always been the same.
My daughter was watched closely in high school because she barely made the 100lb mark and all they see her do is pig out in the cafeteria. She complained I don't buy enough food and some actually believed this. My teenagers are bottomless pits, grocery costs for us high-metabolites are not to be envied!Oh yeah, I do get the "poor baby" response too, or "you must be a healthnut nut and exercise 24/7". I used to be a total couch potato and now do strengthening for problems resulting from spinal damage.
Thanks for pointing out the Doc's view, I'm a Greenhorn in the field.
