Mood Stabilizer questions and help needed for BP

Posted by olysi79 on December 12, 2004, at 15:24:35

Hello,
I am BP II /w mixed episodes. I take Trileptal and Luvox for my BP and anxiety disorders (ativan occasionally). My PDOC and I recently did two things. We added in buspar to counteract sexual side effects and also increased my trileptal. Within a week I went into an agitated depression... we dropped the Buspar, then I felt a bit better for a few days, and then again, went into an agitated depression with severe anxiety. Am I cycling? I've dropped the trileptal back down to see if that helps, but I have been in utter misery. What did I do wrong?? I was given a dose of Zyprexa to take but will not take it as it causes akathisia, and I think most anxious people agree that Akathisia just makes things worse! How can I deal witht hese mixed anxiety states? Are there any options out there to help that aren't addictive? What did I do to destabilize myself!?

I've had some rage spells in the past that are attributable to Buspar. It will tinker with your chemistry and those effects take a week or two to start reversing after you stop it. I'd say go with a steady dosing of ATivan (and maybe an even higher regular dose) and see if it evens out. Were you taking a lot of Buspar? I found that 5mg seemed to help some.. but 10mg/day or more it triggered rage reactions. Whenever it first came out in the early '80's they tried to put me on it and it didn't work well then. I tried taking a "large" dose once (30mg) and had a profound dysphoric reaction.

I've been takign Benedryl and Trazodone to help calm me down... I too tried a large dose of Buspar once... Big mistake... severe agitation, suicidal thoughts, akithisia, you name it, I had it. I'm really worried about this now, and am not sure on how to handle it.

Has the trazodone been helping any? Just wondering because traz. has a metabolite that can be anxiogenic for some people.. I think it is 1-PP or something like that. I never got any kind of mixed state or manic symptoms from traz before but it was kind of a mixed bag as far as anxiety was concerned. Benedryl has always been a life-saver of a kind for me in the past.. mostly when I was super agitated. There are few things that are as blissful as having akathisia settle down and go away! :)

Ritch, amen to that... Akithisia is a horrible thing. I have terrible mixed episodes, I cannot sit still, I am panicked, and overwhelmed. It's a horrible feeling. In fact, I'm doped up on Benedryl right now...
