Hi,
I live in the UK and was wondering if anyone there had been prescribed any non-SSRI anti-depressants. I have been on and off SSRIs for several years, and always end up stopping them because of the sexual side-effects and then sliding back into a depression and have to start taking them again. I know this is probably a familiar story.
I've never known anyone in the UK to take anything other than SSRIs and when I complained about the sexual side-effects to my doctor she just said 'Yes, sorry, they do have those side-effects but as you don't have a boyfriend at the moment, I wouldn't worry about it.' She made me feel like a nymphomaniac for even caring about my sex life...
I now (finally) have managed to get referred to a psychiatrist, and might ask him/her about trying something different, but would like to hear about other people's experiences first before I embarrass myself again!
btw I'm female, 23 and currently taking 20 mg of celexa.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi!
I live in England. I take the antidepressant lofepramine (Gamanil). It is a tricyclic antidepressant which usually causes far fewer side effects than the traditional tricyclics such as dothiepin (Prothiaden). Before the SSRIs dothiepin was the most commonly prescribed antidepressant in England!!
You might like lofepramine (Gamanil) because it is very unlikely to cause sexual problems. Psychiatrists like it because it has low toxicity in overdose.

Thanks Ed, I just looked up lofepramine on the web and it looks like it might be a good choice -I hadn't heard of it before.
I think I definitely need to change from Celexa anyway, as it is doing absolutely nothing for me. Sigh.
Thanks for your help.
