questions for Selegiline users?

Posted by craig getty on October 9, 2004, at 17:56:16

Monday is my monthly visit to my pdoc and I was thinking about talking to him about selegiline to help with my dysthymia & low motivation.

I'm currently on Wellbutrin SR (300 mg) and Adderall ER (20-40 mg). I also usually take 0.25 - 0.5 mg of Klonopin for anxiety.

If you have taken selegiline, what did it (did it?) help you with? What dosage? Did you experience any side effects? What else were/are you taking in addition to selegiline? Can selegiline cause anxiety?

And...did you have trouble getting your pdoc to prescribe it as it is only officially approved for Parkinson's disease?

1 more selegiline question - anyone?

One more question: did you find the drug to be more activating or deactivating? In other words, would it help give you more energy or help you sleep better at night? I've seen conflicting reports on this. Thanks.

Craig,
I am not currently taking selegiline but I have tried it a couple of times. Selegiline is for the most part stimulating and can cause insomnia and an increase in anxiety. It put me to sleep but I react paradoxically to ALL stimulatnts. Those who react to selegiline in this way would also react to speed or Adderall etc. by falling asleep. The majority of people will be stimulated by selegiline. There are a lot of good posts on this subject here if you do a search. I'm sure they will answer any questions you might have about it.

Kara,

Thanks for your reply. As it turned out, my doc wasn't aware of selegiline helping depression in doses under 30 mg (the point where it can behave like an MAOI-A, which I don't want). And since I was 25 min. late to my half hour appointment, there wasn't any time for him to look it up. So I guess I'll wait until next month. So far, on the various psycho-babble posts and google searches, I've only found 1 link for a study of selegiline and depression (not including the patch, which I don't think is yet available).

Anyway, my doc took a totally different approach - he prescribed trazodone with the concept that if perhaps I stop waking up at 3am every night, then I will have more energy and my mood will increase. It worked last night - but that could have been the result of a gin & tonic and a few "medicinal" tokes...

Selegiline does have the possibility of helping you at sub MAO-A selective doses. Everyone reacts differently to meds, so I say if it's something you really wanna try then go for it.
There HAVE been successful studies on combining it with celexa and lexapro, although I would keep the doses of each rather low to be safe. Start at 2.5mgs of deprenyl and 10mg/20mg lexapro/celexa and work up carefully moitoring your BP and watching for signs of serotonin syndrome.

Hope this helps,
Justin
