What if AD's make your depression worse?

Posted by vogelbekdier on July 27, 2004, at 17:46:04

Hi, I really hope someone can help me...
I've been taking Effexor for two months, but it only increased my depression. Unfortunately, I also didn't feel better when I stopped taking it.
Now I'm on clomipramine, the first days were ok, but when I reached 100 mg, again I felt terribly depressed. One week 100 mg and now 3 weeks on 125 mg, still no improvement...

I know AD's can make depression/anxiety worse the first weeks, but what if you continue to feel more depressed? Is there any chance the clomipramine will start working miraculously in the next few weeks?
Does this mean that all/most AD's will have this effect on me?

(Oh, a few years ago I also took Paxil, but that didn't do a thing.
Also, other side-effects on every med I tried usually cause me little discomfort..)

Thanx!

Hi,
some ADs can cause depression:
- Wellbutrin made me feel blue irritated and very depressed.
- Milnacipran(Ixel) made me very very angry and hostile from the first pill
- Reboxetine full dose(8mg) made me extemley hopelessly depressed, but when I lowered it to 1mg + benzodiazepine(bromazepam)it gave me energy and concentration.I can not stand more than 1mg rebox a day
so..some ADs can cause depression by
themselves, and sometimes too high or too low a dose can cause new symptoms of depression.

This is another case where mileage varies a lot. For some people, Drug A may worsen depression -- either initially or long term -- while for others it will be like sunshine in a tablet. If your doctor is willing to work with you on this, or you're able to research the drugs you've experienced this with, you can see if there are any common threads to the effects of the drugs in question, and maybe improve the outcome of treatment by targetting a drug with a different method of action.

Another idea that strikes me, though, is that your diagnosis might be out of whack. Sometimes a diagnosis of plain-vanilla depression isn't really enough to guide treatment effectively. For instance, atypical depression responds differently than, say, melancholic depression, so refining the diagnosis can be helpful if you're responding poorly to the drugs you've tried. Hypothyroidism can also mimick depression, so having thyroid levels checked is highly recommended.

Best luck.

I agree with Racer that you should have your thyroid level checked.

You tried Paxil and it did not help. Maybe you should once again try either Paxil, or a different SSRI. It's very possible that a higher dose of Paxil may have helped.
