affects? i'm on lithium and even on a very low dose of 300mg daily, i'm having side affects. i wear contacts and my eyes are always burning from being dryed out. i drink water so i don't know what's up? plus i haven't noticed any good coming from the lithium. i've been reading about symbyax. i've been on prozac before with some success but i have heard that adding something like zyprexa to it helps it. but the side affects on zyprexa scare me too. any info would be wonderful. thanx.

In reply to lithium or zyprexa? which one has the worst side, posted by 4mygrls on June 26, 2004, at 19:32:22
I guess you take what works. But PERSONALLY I would never go on Zyprexa again because of the weight gain. It also made me very tired.
You do have to drink a lot of water on Lithium. Maybe you need a higher dosage. Plus you never said what you were taking it for. If you are bipolar 300 mg of lithium would not be enough to give you the right levels of lithium in your blood.
But for many people, Zyprexa is their saviour and they are willing to put up with the weight gain.

Lithium has some really nasty long term effects, although those are mostly in the higher doses.
My mother has serious kidney damage from taking lithium, I'm hoping to get her moved onto Zyprexa. I think it'd make her happier as well.
But the weight gain is horrific for lots of people, so I can see why you'd want to avoid that. My sister says the hunger isn't as bad if you eat lots of lean protein while taking Zyprexa. You crave carbohydrates but protein is what satisfies. Apparently.
Never taken it myself, so I can't comment.
Good luck!
