can you combine an SSRI with anafranil? would there be any side effects? would there be a quicker response to the meds?

Usually, this is contraindicated because of the enzyme interactions between the regular SSRIs and tricyclics. Since the SSRIs (particularly Prozac and Paxil) inhibit the CYP-450 2D6 enzyme that metabolizes the tricyclics, you can wind up with blood plasma levels of the tricyclic that are much too high.Celexa only inhibits the 2D6 enzyme minimally, so it would be a better choice than the other SSRIs, but the question still remains as to why one would do this. You would be taking two SSRIs at once (Anafranil is the lone tricyclic that is also an SSRI), and this does not seem particularly wise to me. I think there might be at least a small risk of experiencing serotonin syndrome, and if one is trying to counteract side effects of one drug with the other, there are alternative and safer ways to do it.

i was just looking for a way to feel better faster. my ocd & depression are killing me and if there's anything to make it work quicker, i'd love to know what it is.

Anafranil is supposed to have a lot of side effects, but it has a reputation as possibly the most effective AD out there, as well as being the first drug to prove efficacious for OCD. I was practically begging my doctor for the stuff a few months ago, and if I am still feeling depressed by summer's end I will ask him to reconsider.I don't think Anafranil works any faster than an SSRI, but it would have an excellent chance of working if an SSRI doesn't work for you.

the celexa/wellbutrin combo worked well for me before, i'm just worried that it won't work again. my pdoc reassured me yesterday that since its worked before, there's a very, very good chance that it'll work again. its only been 3 weeks since i restarted them and he said i need to keep hangin in there and wait. i hate waiting!
