What is typical day-one starting dose of Parnate?

Posted by don_bristol on June 1, 2004, at 17:44:43

What is typical starting dose of Parnate?

In other words what is the typical dose taken on day one?

Of course we are all different but I would still like to know what the "typical" day one dose is. And also how fast it is typically increased.

I assume there is quite a lot of variation but at least this will give me some idea about how I am doing.

Thanks!

According to "Mosby's 2004 Drug Guide", "The usual effective dosage is 30 mg/day, usually given in divided doses. If there are no improvements after a reasonable period (up to 2 weeks), then the dosage may be increased in 10 mg/day increments at intervals of 1-3 weeks; the dosage range may be extended to a maximum of 60 mg/day from the usual 30 mg/day."

I've read elsewhere that 40 mg/day is perhaps a more common effective dose than 30, but I agree with the dosage instructions above that recommend starting at 30 mg/day. I think they are well thought out, being prudent but not excessively cautious, and I can imagine if I were to try Parnate, my doctor and I would likely follow them to the letter.

My week #1 starting doses were always:

20 mg. first two days,
30 mg. next three days,
then 40 mg. for maintenance dose.

Would decrease back to 30 mg. after depression is definitely in remission (after about 2 months). Hope this helps.

That is very useful. More so than you might at first realise!

What sort of side effects and how severe were they in thre first week or two?

If anyone else could post their starting regime for parnate then I would be very interested.

I'd say they were never severe, just uncomfortable for the first couple of weeks. Side effects included fluctuations in blood pressure, with a daily low of about 57/80 (quite low but acceptable according to pdoc), cravings for sweets and carboydrates. I used to get a dry mouth but did not experience that last time I re-started the Parnate.

I took 10mg for the first couple of days, then 10 in the morning and 10 in the afternoon for a few days, then 20mg in the morning/10mg in the afternoon for a few weeks.

I ended up taking 40mg/day, typically 30mg in the morning and 10mg in the afternoon.

Sorry tro ask so many questions but ... what were the side effects during or at the end of that time and how severe were they. Did some side effects get better and some get worse and how long did they last for.

Answer whichever questions you can! Other's experieces with starting Parnate would also be very valuable to me. .... Just post when you went through the different strength doses when you started Parnate and how good or bad you felt at those doses.

I would be very greatful to received this info. Thank you.

Cubbybear, did you get quite noticeable wakefulness at nighttime when you started at 20 mg Parnate and rapidly went on to 30 mg?

Sorry, I forgot to mention the issue of sleep. With me, I don't think it was ever a problem of bad insomnia, but rather A REDUCED NEED FOR SLEEP, like down to 5 hrs/per night that I've always experienced with Parnate, That side effect doesn't disapear in time. If I've got something on my mind at night, I'll probably have a very rough time falling asleep, and at those times, I'll take .5 mg. Xanax or equiv. amount of other benzo like Valium, but I don't do this often.
