hi joebob, trazodone likes to bind to a histaminergic receptor (H_{1}), among others, and the sedating effect is largely attributable to this modality...but if it is working for you in the capacity as a sedative, then it is doing its job (and it does not stimulate histamine production/depletion, it has a very similar binding affinity for the receptor in question as histamine itself, so-called competitive binding)...if you are taking it as an anti-depressant and the sedation is affecting you but the depression has been tempered, perhaps an alternative med that targets the alpha_{1}-NA and 5-HT_{2} receptors but has lower affinity for H_{1} is called for....i defer to the other posters for suggestions, as i have little knowledge of a suitable substitute.....apologies for a dead-end, and all the best, chemist
