Wellbutrim users - advice please!

Posted by jms600 on April 13, 2004, at 16:20:25

Hello,

I am currently on Prozac, but am constantly drowsy, sluggish, apathetic, lethargic, have no energy, and probably the most destressing of all, I have little interest in anything. I am seeing my P/Doc early next month so am going to ask to try Wellbutrim as I don't think the Prozac is helping as much as it should be.

I have heard that Wellbutrim has little affinity for Serotonin receptors. Is there any point in taking an SSRI while on Wellbutrim?? Will I notice an increase in the anti-depressant effects of the Wellbutrim if I take an SSRI with it??

I have also heard that Wellbutrim has allot of affinity for Dopamine receptors. How dose it affect Dopamine?? Can I take an Antipsychotic (for anxiety) while on the Wellbutrim??

Finally is Wellbutrim licensed in the UK??

Thanks!!

Works more by a norandrenergic mechanism which is also stimulating. It does dimish the reuptake of dopamine also, but not to the same extent. I take 300 mg of the SR version and it works great for energy and pretty good for mood as well.

I added Wellbutrin to Lexparo a couple of months a go. It definitely gave me some extra energy and extra antidepressant effect (although I wasn't really depressed on the Lex alone).

But, I discontinued the Wellbutrin after a few weeks because it made me somewhat jittery and I felt like I had trouble relaxing.

Some docs think it's best used as an adjunctive drug (i.e. works well with others and gives a "boost" to the initial drug.) That's how I take it with Effexor. There are no contraindications with SSRIs. As far as the UK I'm not sure...I'm in the "colonies" aka Canada.

I was taking Wellbutrin XR 300mg with Lexapro, and the Lexapro wasn't working AT ALL. The Wellbutrin did give me energy, but did NOT effect my depression at all. I'm now on Prozac along with the Wellbutrin, but I just started it last week so I can't tell you much about that yet.
How much Prozac are you taking? I know I was on 60 mg in the past and it worked well for me, which is why I'm back on it. I have fairly hard to treat depression, and its been the only thing that works. This back and forth stuff (trying new meds and switching back) has been sheer h*ll, so I for one am going to stick with the Prozac. Next time they have the next *new* thing, I'm going to pass.
