The old guidelines for MAOIs were somewhat restrictive for alcoholic drinks, and I recall my former pdoc saying "no red wine, only white is OK."
I'd appreciate receiving the latest guidelines on which drinks would be OK with Parnate, particularly wines.

Most red wines actually seem to be okay. Chianti wine has a fairly high tyramine content and should best be avoided IMO. What must be absolutely avoided is tap beer, which has shown alarmingly high tyramine levels in several different investigations. Most bottled beers seem to be okay, particularly from the major breweries. Shulman, et al, from the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto recommend no more than two drinks per day for MAOI patients. I take Nardil myself and admit moderately exceeding this (three or four drinks on occasion). The following provides some info on dietary and alcoholic restrictions, along with everything else you'd ever want to know about adverse reactions with MAOIs:http://www.vh.org/adult/provider/psychiatry/CPS/19.html

When I was on Parnate I experimented with a few drinks at first (beer), and then eventually more (8 at most). I didn't notice any adverse effects except maybe feeling a little weird (same as with any AD). Just experiment *carefully* if you really feel the need to drink.

Parnate made me hypo-manic 12 years ago! and I DID FEEL the need to experiment. I used scotch like it was going out of style (Doc said 1, 2 or 3..... wouldn't hurt! and then I finally crashed and the Parnate pooped out. I have been struggling ever since. Be careful!!
