Depersonalization help!

Posted by AubeCynthia on March 26, 2004, at 14:48:24

Hi,

My name is Cynthia, I suffer dp since the birth of my child (I had a cesarian then a panick attack on the operation table). Since then, I feel dp 24/7, (I dont feel myself, I remember who I was but I can't FEEL it inside, outside I feel not there, it's so scary).

I tried many medications : Celexa, Zoloft, Remeron, etc. but I have some problem with side effects of the beginning.

I wonder if someone has success with an AD. I take klonopin (0,5 mg a day) but it doesn't help for dp. I also see a psychiatrist and a psychologist.

I wonder about Anafranil or Paxil. Is someone get helped with those medications? I am very depressed, and I obsess about it all the time. It's like an OCD problem.

Thanks for your success stories. I am serious about this question, I would like some serious answers.

Cynthia

Hi Cynthia,

I have only experienced dp during panic attacks and it's really unpleasant, I'm sorry it's something you have to live with on a daily basis.

I noticed that you've given up on meds because of early side effects. There are a lot of things you can take to help you cope with those side effects (e.g. if Celexa makes you anxious, a low dose of Xanax can help calm you down), or maybe you are sensitive to meds and need to start at very low doses. (I know I do.)

I hope you find a med that works for your dp. Best of luck to you.

K.

Hi Cynthia. I can sympathize. I've had it for about 2.5 yrs with no relief.
Make sure first it's not psyical, i.e thyroid, atypical migraines (3 neurologists have told me this). Started migraine medicine 5 weeks ago, little relief so far.
Mine began after a break through 8-10 hr panic attack, and has been there since.
I obsess about it 24/7 as well.
I think that the best AD is completely case-by-case. Depends on where it comes from.
For me, I know that it stems from panic disorder, OCD, and anxiety, so probably Paxil (cr) is the best option for me right now (just started 3 days ago).
Preliminary studies by the two leading departments in the study of depersonalization disorder (Mt Sinai in NY, the other in England, you can find the links, great studies and literature, print and take to the pdocs, they don't know crap about the disorder)
Early studies are showing success of LAMICTAL (bipolar/epilepsy drug), as well as ABILIFY and other atypicals like SERZONE. And of course the benzons, but you mentioned that the klonopin doesn't seem to help, but .5 a day is really small.
A great site to go to is dpselfhelp.com

good luck,

brian
