I have epilepsy but I am fairly certain that I have become hypomanic (or at least did not tolerate) on topomax, lamictal and zonegran. I have been on zonegran for several months and even thought it controls the siezure stuff the hypomania symptoms are worse on this drug so I am slowly tapering off. I need to ask my neuro for another med. I would like to try pregabalin if it ever comes on the market. But what else is good already out there that does not cause this? please someone answer, thank you if there are any replies.

Have you already tried Depakote and Trileptal? Those are pretty tried and true. Trileptal has few side effects in most people.

Hi, I haven't been on the board in a while so this post isn't very timely... I'm taking Tegretol (Carbamazepine) and it works like a charm! What type of seizures do you have and what AEDs are you taking to control that?

Hi~ I have complex partial seizures (TLE). I've been taking zonegran for several months. It works, but i can't sleep and its made me extremely agitated fast thoughts, etc... I desperately need the opposite, to be calmer, sleepier, but still control the seizures!
I've given this drug a good try but my body can't take this anymore. Lowering gradually has helped a wee bit but I just want to be off of this.
thanks for another reccomendation. I will also bring this up to my neuro.

Lamictal is supposed to be a mood _stabilizer_, so in theory should not cause hypomanic episodes. However, I had a doozy of a one when I went from 50 mg/day to 100/mg day, and have experienced some overactivation for a few days about 3 days after each increment in dosage (currently at 300 mg/d). At least one other person has posted a similar experience. The hyperactivity does seem to pass off fairly quickly though.
This is the end of the thread.
