Hi - I am planning to get pregnant and wanted to know what problems/issues/alerts I need to know for taking Lexapro while trying and while pregnant. Any insight? Thanks!

My doc put me on Lexapro because she said it was the safest antidepressant for pregnancy. My depression was caused my trying to conceive, and she knows that we are still trying. According to my coworker ( a prenatal care coordinator), tests are not done on pregnant women so the conclusiveness of the safety of these meds are unclear. I don't think this helps you out, but please know you are not the only one in this situation.

Since Lexapro is a relatively new drug, I would definitely use caution. My pdoc said he has monitored several pregnant women on Zoloft with no issues lately. I would definitely discuss it with your pdoc and ob/gyn. Keep in mind the withdrawl symptoms of SSRI's when deciding to get pregnant. This is what concerns me. I wouldn't want the baby to go through that. Jenn

I agree, but just to let you know. I had my last two children while I had been on TCA's (I was taken off each time I became pregnant) At that time (late 70's early 80's) there was no way they would have kept me on anything. Stangely, but happily, when I was pregnant or nursing a baby, my whole emotional makeup underwent a sharp change for the better. (A good thing as I have eight children) If I were you I would listen to the doc on this one. There is no way of knowing how the hormonal changes will effect you, Is this your first? Have you ever come off an SSRI before to know how you react?

Both zoloft and prozac have been studied more extensively than any other SSRI in regard to pregnancy. Studies show that they are safe to take during pregnancy but I am uncertain as to what dose these women were on when the studies were conducted. I took 50 mg of zoloft during my last pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby boy.
