Theoretically, you can get hyperpyrexia from mixing an MAOI and tricyclic, but these two classes of drugs are sometimes cautiously combined. This whole MAOI/tricyclic thing is a gray area, but regardless, your psychiatrist's actions would strike some people as imprudent. My doctor made me wait two weeks after discontinuing desipramine before starting Nardil. However, perhaps your doctor has more experience and insight in this area than my doctor and I do.Todd

A TCA you can't take with an MAOI is Clomipramine(Anafranil) as it a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Another to avoid would be Imipramine(Tofranil) as it is mild serotonin reuptake inhibitor. These may give serotonin syndrome.

Amitriptyline's main effect is its H1 histamine blockade, but it is still relatively serotonergic (selectivity ratio 1.6 to 1 in favor of NE reuptake blockade over serotonin reuptake blockade).
